“Your Safety is Yours” Realtor® Safety
As Realtors® we go about our day as if we are safe because after all, we are at work, our work place is safe right? Our work all but requires us to put ourselves in precarious positions: late nights at the office, meeting strangers and open houses to name a few. At open houses we even advertise that we will be in a house, usually alone and for how long.
When I first became a Realtor® I expected some type of class or system to be in place and I was dumbfounded when I was told, “no, there isn’t any training offered.” And so far I’ve found that to be very true, beyond the NAR’s tips and videos the security plan suggested was “Take someone with you.”
A fellow Realtor® and Active Rainer recommended this book The Gift of Fear by Gavin DeBecker. Although it was published in 1999 the insight he shares regarding personal safety continues to be relent today. Mr. DeBecker, has the experience and the expertise to help us stop, listen and be able to identify and avoid the dangers among us.
One of the statements Mr. DeBecker makes in the book that really struck a cord with me was “Your safety is yours” we, as individuals and as Realtors ® have to take ownership of our safety and never discount our intuition our “inner guardian angel” because as he so eloquently puts it in his books we often “could have seen it coming.”

Diane, sorry, I just cant help myself!
Whenever I read any post on Realtor safety, I have to point out that the most dangerous part of our job is when we are driving - especially when we are driving and eating or driving and talking on our cell phones.
So watch your car!

I have many realtor partners who have become friends. Each time I hear about an issue of realtor safety I think of them and say a prayer. Have someone with you when you can, take every pre-caution and trust your gut...good information!
