Cut Down On Multitasking To Be Really Good

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

Multiple ThingsThey say Moms even before the word multitasking was invented were the all time natural multitaskers with raising children. But

Cut Down On Multitasking To Be Really Good.

Research has shown despite living in a rat race world that requires us to do it, multitasking is not for our serial thinking brain and is unhealthy and inefficient. Unhealthy like NEVER text and drive, and inefficient cause we perform better doing one thing at a time. We don't concentrate as well with more than one task. Refocusing between tasks jumbles our brain and drains it.

Other than autonomic breathing and heart rate, try the best you can MOST of the time to do one thing at a time. It will result in a much better job done.

Great picture Gary... I think women are more guilty of this multi-tasking than men.  Our brains just think we can do everything at once!  Kathy

Some people like Caeser and Napoleon, were good at that, but overwhelming majority are not. But then, they are not killed by Brutus or been defeated at Waterloo (LOL)

If you can mutlitask it is great, but very hard to do 2 things well.  Doing two minor errands at one time is great but leave the major tasks for one at a time.

Thanks, Gary.  As a wife and cook, I can multi-task.  When it comes to my career, I concentrate on what I am doing at the time.  I want only the best for my clients, and that means slowing down and staying focused.

Gary I agree with you.  Having spent a good part of my adult life multi-tasking to the extreme I would not recommend it.

I am a very focus task person, I do not do well with multi tasking or distractions as I find it diverts my attention and that is when mistakes are made.  When writing up an offer you can not afford mistakes!  I have had assistance comment that I need to learn to multi task and I always responded that it was just not very productive that I accomplished more when staying with something and no errors.  So the recent validation of the recommendation of concentrating on one thing was very welcome news, nice to know I had it right all along!

Love the photo.  My daughter says there is no such thing as multi-tasking, because truly, you are only doing one thing at one time.  (you are switching between activities, according to her) So, if you are texting while driving...most likely you really aren't driving...  Focus and attention are key to a job well done.  Nice reminder.

It's all fun and games until someone gets their eye poked out which is exactly what eventually occurs, especially if the tasks are anything like the ones pictured.  Was the original multi-tasker the ill fated child running with scissors?  We've progressed so well in the new millenium Gary.

Great picture  and this is certainly provides some food for thought.  I guess my multitasking abilities have decreased some what while being in the Army.  For example, we are not allowed to walk and talk on our cell phones at the same time while in uniform.  That sure is a lot of wasted time......lol

Gary, I see agents in our office, and other offices when going to closings, that are running around frantic trying to do several things at once.  I used to be that way but now I don't get like that.  I found that calming down and focusing on the point at hand is actually faster and gets better results.

Gary, I'm getting use to coming over here for the very profound. I have always been a generalist and can do many things....I always do them one thing at a time. I've told people for many years that I wear many hats but only one at a time. It works for me. My husband and daughter can do 10 things at once and always know what's going on with all the different levels. Amazing to me. Great post! OMG...where did you get that photo......love it! Made me laugh!

"I listen for a living." It's all about you.

I recently attended the fall conference of my company.  One thing struck me about time and it was when a business exec was talking about how much time he wasted on email.  I am guilty of that and have not missed a single thing by putting the email work into smaller chunks rather than responding in the moment to an email. I am liberated.

HI Gary - great post and this is a good reminder to slow down and finish one thing at a time for a better result. I find myself  trying to multi-talk too much at times!

Dear Gary -

Always count on Jon Zolsky (#3) to bring in the humor!
I am so in need of this lesson - as Cara's daughter (#8) says - we really only do one thing at a time anyway!

Have a happy (birthday),

Multi-tasking is good sometimes but it can be disturbing to your brain too if doing it too often or wrong time such as driving.

Gary, Somehow, I think that God gives Mom's extra energy when raising our children.  When I look back at all of the schedules that we had, while my children were growing up, I cannot believe all that was accomplished in a day or in a week.  Time did seem to just, fly by!

As far as texting while driving, that's just not acceptable. Taking your eyes off the road, even for a second, is much too dangerous.

Happy Birthday!

Gary,

This is a perfect post for Cherise.  I marvel at her multi-tasking abilities.  She would have also been texting while driving and putting on her eye shadow.  Just kidding about doing all three... LOL  g

I've noticed that even when my "To Do" list is very large, I have to just figure what I'll really get to PLUS what really needs my attention, then I move the other things to a different day. Im more productive when I identify the items that MUST have my attention, rather than trying to do it all. Good tip Gary.
