October is National Fire Prevention Month and this week is National Fire Prevention Week. We will be recognizing this important national event this week and next week on our blog with some fire safety tips and information for you and your family.
According to the Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), most Americans underestimate their risk for fire, and many either lack emergency response plans – or fail to practice them with fire drills. We hope that through spreading awareness, we can change that and keep our readers and their families safe! We hope everyone will be encouraged to take the steps to update and maintain your homes and follow all the great fire prevention advice that will be posted here.
About National Fire Prevention Week. In addition to Fire Prevention Month, school age children will learn about fire safety during Oct 9-15, which is Fire Prevention Week this year. The week has its roots in the Great Chicago Fire, which took place on October 9, 1871. The theme for 2011 Fire Prevention Week is, "Protect Your Family from Fire," and tomorrow we will talk about family fire escape plans.
