81 Comments on Men Only - "It's not for Women."
I have not seen this product out in the store.
This is an interesting ad campaign however I don't see an issue with men drinking diet soda. I drink alot of the diet products now.
Wow... first time I've seen that commercial... I remember about 5 years back I stumbled onto a "just for men" hair color commercial being filmed at the park I fly at.. The produced walked up and invited me to stay and hang with the cast and crew. I told him I hated their sexist commercials... He then went and found the writer of ALL the commercials, brought him over and I told him the same thing.. I said most of the men who buy your product are married or similarly attached and as a woman, I wouldn't pick up your product at the store for them because I am offended by your commercials...
He then pulled out an entire book of new story boards and said we have a new campaign we are considering... they were all tasteful... the daughters getting dad to use it to meet someone new, etc. Since that time, I've only seen tasteful commercials out of that product.
I think this new diet soda commercial is tongue-in-cheek funny, but I do remember those from the not so distant past that violate many many discrimiation laws. I can't see how we could 'niche' market in any way for gender in our business.
btw... I drink diet coke! (wish they would make the cans PINK for October)
Their research sucks. I see men buying diet sodas everyday at 7/11. A man I work with is 6'7" tall and 300lbs, and he only drinks diet sodas. Ask the researcher to tell him he's not manly enough if he drinks diet sodas.
Stopped back to say CONGRATS on the feature. WOO HOO!
I saw this commercial as well when it debuted the other night, it had me cracking up. The major points are there is no gray area here, you either love Dr pepper or Hate it. As well you either have a taste for diet soda or cant stand it. People cant take everything so litterally they see on TV Ads, it is supposed to bring attention and cause people to talk about it, it looks like they hit their target becuase here we are.
Justin, Spoken like a secure male. :)
Tatyana - yep, that's the handsome" David Ducovney, why don't ya love me?" Remember the song? Women only? Secret deodorant ads.
Susan - Good to see you - how's the video business? I'm with you, it's important to think out of the box to get attention - they have done that!
Brian - Helllooo! :) Thanks for the return visit - you can see your "fan" club here in AR appreciated your very "smart and manly comments."
Shannon - I know what you mean Smart Girl! Somebody better not say i "can't do something." Ha. Perhaps they realize that about a lot of women (and men.)
Erica - I do too. I thought the ads were pretty cute and the campaign sure has stirred folks up a bit.
Andrew - I assume you're saying niche markeitng works. If so, we agree. They are targeting men, but next time? And that niche marketing also applies to real estate. True.
Cindy Lou, Is that really you? I must say you look quite attractive with facial hair and those aviator glasses. It will be interesting to see if all this publiclity from the ads works to sell soda. I'm not convinced as it's the same old tired product - that many Americans are trying to give up.
Robert and Lisa - Perfect. You are proving the point, the ad is not going to make you start drinking sodas, diet or otherwise. Thanks for the visit and the comments.
Kathy- true that. Get upset over something that really matters. I think the ads are pretty cute too - but, doubt they'll make non soda drinkers into a soda drinker. :)
Evelyn - I'm a huge proponent of niche marketing. The micro brew business revived beer sales with their great positioning of the product and IMHO improvements to the taste of beer. Who doesn't want to taste a refreshing beer that represents a region? Not sure the Dr Pepper folks are going to be able to do the same.
Hi Christine - I'm wondering the same - I also normally watch TV the same way too. I made a point to look for these ads. :)
Mel - words of wisdom from the Naked Blogger. Yep, testosterone as an ingredient would be a real interesting touch - and a little blue pill for the rest of the story. Leave it to you - !!! Love it. you. :)
Cheryl, I'm glad you wanted to take a second look. Good lesson here in catchy titles. Richard Yates is the master at that. Titles that Titillate. Perhaps it's niche marketing?
Mark - they are creating a buzz - and not just with this blog. :)
John - I think that makes you smart. Additives and chemicals aren't good for anybody - man or woman.
Keith - I think that if a man drinks diet soda - it's cool with me ( and most folks) - it's obviously not a "manly or unmanly" thing to do. I wouldn't drink sodas because of the negative health issues, but I used to. No judgment going on from me if you choose to do so - it's your business.
Beverly - you fly? I'm going to come visit you and learn more. That's intriguing - so is your ability to get in the middle of the production business for Just for Men hair color. Perhaps you helped change the tide of stupid ads from them. That's a good feeling, I'm sure.
I think we could niche market in RE by the language we choose in our ads or marketing, but as for blatant stuff - our discrimination laws would likely prevent it - and that's good.
Jeff - Point made. Thanks for the visit and comments. I value your opinion.
Sharon - Oh thank you so much. I love the red roses too. See you on your blog.
Scott - :) And here we are!
I like Dr. Pepper, I wonder if I will suddenly develop facial hair if I try the new product?
I see Cindy Westfall beat me to the punch and with a great graphic also.
Cherry, Lol - Cindy's comment & photo shop efforts were so funny. Doubt Dr. Pepper Ten is that manly though. I think the FDA frowns on the practice of adding hormones to beverages. At least, I hope so. Thanks for the visti. :)
Debb, very interesting. This ad plays us on so many levels! ANother one would be, "what?? it's NOT for women? Watch me!", or "what's so special about it that it's NOT for women?", etc etc. in any case, it creates an emotional reaction, that helps to set the product apart from other hundreds on the market. Clever.
But - it's all hear say to me, as I don't drink soda, and almost never watch tv, lol!
I think this will go down as a misstep by Dr. Pepper. Just a bad idea that didn't fly. Not a flop the magnitude of NEW COKE, but certainly it will have a limited shelf life and be gone before you know it.
Hmmm...Very interesting!
A soft drink is a soft drink is a soft drink.
They're all bad for anyone who drinkis them.
Anna - I hear ya loud and clear. Hey came to visit you - you must be busy as you haven't been blogging much of late.
I think you are likey correct Ron, good marketing dumb product.
Eric - thanks for the visit. Have you seem any of their marketing efforts?
Lenn - short and sweet and correct. That's why I think it won't work, inspite of clever marketing. Which is the real lesson for all of us. Niche marketing works, but if we don't work well for our clients - it won't mean much in the end. :)
Deb, I have not seen any other than what I've seen here. Between my wife, 4 sons, fishing and work I never watch tv. But I guess I need to get in the loop.
No you don't Eric, sounds like you're spending time on the "right things." :)
Lots of women only and men only events are illegal in California. Many years ago a couple of male attorneys tried to go to a women's only night at a local bar and were not let in. They sued for sex discrimination and won.
I remember that story Jim - do they still have gentlemen's clubs? That always seemed to push the discrimination envelope.
Colorado must have been a test market for this stuff. I was at a grocery store with a guy friend about a year ago and they were giving out samples...
Sample Gal: "Would you like to try Dr. Pepper 10?"
My guy friend: "Sure." sip "I give it an 8."
I cracked up for days!
Lol - Didi that is funny.
