Got the Flu? No Home Tour For You!

I have awesome clients. Perhaps this has to do with luck, or maybe birds of a feather merely flock together. Either way, I am fortunate to work with some neat people.

One of my sellers called last night to cancel a home showing. Though the market is pretty steady, a showing is not something to dismiss without good reason. Why did she cancel? It seems her family is suffering from a nasty stomach virus!

As the father of four, I am a veteran of many such calamities. Before the virus is gone the whole family gets hit. Between illness and caring for others, families hit by the bug usually miss a week of normal life. This is not something I would wish on my worst enemy!

If only I received a nickle for every home I've toured with sick owners. There is nothing like multiple bottles of NyQuil and dirty Kleenex to put clients in the buying mood. Such tours are artifacts of sellers putting their need to sell the house ahead of the buyer's health.

Let's not forget about the agent in the scenerio. Most of us are paid on commission. Miss a week due to family illness? There is no such thing as "comp time" in real estate world. No work means no paycheck.

So kudos to my client for doing the right thing. Will the buyers reschedule? Who knows? But, NyQuil permitting she can sleep well knowing she did the right thing.

In this day and age, with more and more virulent bugs going around, your seller did the right thing.  May I add, I you are sick, do not come to work!

Hey Doug, I had this scenario happen last year when showing clients homes to lease/purchase.  The home manager at this one particular house was sick (or tipsy depending on he smell of her breath) and so was the daughter (in bed exhausted from school finals).  My client was expecting and really did not feel comfortable touring the home, but the home manager assured her nothing was contagious.  We went forward, but it was an uncomfortable feeling.  In the end my client picked another home.

Thanks for the post.  It's different.  Continued success to you!

Chris--We had some REALLY nasty stomach bugs hit back in 2009. Not a pretty time to tour homes!

Jordon--That property manager would have received an unpleasant phone call after an episode like that. Imagine if the expecting mom got sick? That can get serious in a hurry!

Doug,  I can relate to your post as I appreciate others who don't pass on their germs.  As my dear mother would say 'there are some things we should NOT share.'  I hope the buyers will reconsider otherwise it just wasn't meant to be.

Doug - it does not take much for an illness to spread from one home to many with a purchaser plus family plus agent touring many homes after passing through the home.

That was, indeed, the right thing for the sellers to do. And a very unselfish one too.
