Jersey Shore Meets Social Media (Just my Take)

Social Media ButtonsOkay so Google + is public, and the it seems that some people just love it, and then some people don't. That is completely understandable, what I am puzzled by is the sheer hate I am seeing in some posts. What is causing that? Honestly it does remind me of bad episode of Jersey Shore. Why all this commotion about a which social media platform is the ONE! Maybe I over simplify things but the way I see it, if you don't like Google +, don't engage on it, stick with what you like, but don't waste my time being negative and well, some are downright mean. Life is too short to try and force your will or opinions on others. Understand I am not talking about well thought out, well written opinion pieces here, I am talking about the "smack" ala Jersey Shore comments that I have seen from some.

ActiveRainPersonally I am a Twitter user first and foremost, however I also enjoy FB, Linkedin, and (oh no he isn't) Google +, as well as Delicious, SU, Tumblr and a host of others. Oh and not to mention to my ActiveRain family, irreplaceable! Some I use more often than others and some for specific reasons, but nowhere will you read anything from me talking smack about one or the other. As I have said before, keep the Internet free, free to use and engage on whatever level you want, on whatever platform you want. Is that so revolutionary?

I guess what is confusing me the most is that some of the really bad comments are coming from individuals who on other posts preach peace, love, dove. How can you on one hand endorse freedom of expression and on the other bash a platform that you dislike. I guess you can because that is the heart of freedom of expression, but really am I the only who sees this as counter productive.

Quite frankly, I am not impressed with the FB changes and am finding myself using Google + more and more, but that is me, and I am not blogging or commenting about how FB is dying etc, besides my most commonly used platform continues to be Twitter, and I don't see that ending anytime soon.

I guess in the end I just don't understand the need some people have for making things so dramatic, if you like it, use it, if not , don't. After all we are in a economic crisis worldwide, do you think which social media platform you like has all that much importance on the truly important issues of the day?

Which brings me to my final point, if utilizing a particular social media platform can positively affect the world in a certain way, say helping to reduce childhood hunger, do you really care which platform is successful in such an endeavor? Isn't the end result the important thing? Come on people, lighten up, life is too short for such pettiness.

Hi Gerry - I've wondered the same thing. It's not like we're major stakeholders in any of those concerns - but wait a minute, maybe we are. I have become passionate about AR and a few other sites on occasion, and I guess I could get my back up if I thought that my enjoyment of the community was threatened in any way. Maybe it's just that we become very invested personally in these types of sites as they assume an important role in our lives. I agree that we don't really need the drama and negativity, though- it doesn't serve any productive purpose.

Dick,

was threatened in any way... I do believe you have hit the proverbial nail on the head...

I absoulutely love AR but have never badmouthed other platforms, alright I have come close to doing that with Zillow, but didn't.

OK let's help Nana out.  I love Google but have no clue what Google + is and where do I find it.  I don't twitter nearly enough but I always mean well.  AR has taken me to another planet and by the way there is someone always ranting and raving about something.

This is just getting harder and harder to keep up. Kudos to you for understanding what is good and what isn't.

I agree, Gerry. It's like people on a listserv who complain about certain email topics. My feeling is if you don't want to read it, don't open it and just delete it. People get so worked up about the least important things. What happened to "live and let live".
