Spam - A Thorn In My Side

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with ActiveRain

We all roll our eyes when we see another dreaded ugg boot spam message or the new $77 coffee one that is going around.  Nobody cares that your cheap knock off Fendi shades are for sale!!  No I don't want you to write an essay for me.  So we hit "Report a Concern" and eventually they disappear. Most members have gone to Settings and unchecked the "Allow non-member comments" box but it's a never-ending cycle and one we'd like to do more about.

To further prevent the spread of spam, we have some options:

1.  Make it so that every comment must come from a fully registered account.  We'd be able to easier identify the spam profiles and delete them as fast as we delete the comment.  This means no consumer comments as well (are you getting a ton now?)

2.  Make the captcha standard when leaving any comment.  A shadowed captcha that makes it nearly impossible for the professional spammers to dilute our posts. This means you would have to enter "ancestry rhubarb" each and every time you comment.

So my lovely members....what say you?  If you had to choose #1 or #2 what would it be?

I like Dawn Maloney's idea ( #64) of automatically removing a post after several reports.

Since you operate the server and it is not wordpress, this might be a third alternative:

I'm new so I haven't experienced getting a lot comments yet ( maybe I'm doing something wrong ) but from my experience with spam from other sources, I rarely have an issue i just delete

NO to having to enter a captcha phrase for each commnet - will reduce the number of comments given the add'l hassle factor.

Number one is not really an option since we are all here to better our business and cutting out potential customers.  So you are giving us one lousy option.  I vote to keep it as is until a better or more reasonable option is available.

I have no problem with turning off unregistered comments personally.

The thought of #2 is painful, as half the time you can't read the words anyway and end up doing it twice.

The thought of #1 is not so painful since I turn off outside comments anyway.... getting the odd comment is not worth the spam.  If a consumer really wants to "talk" to me they can still send a message, and they do.

I vote for #1 if it has to be one or the other.  On the other hand, can we just leave it alone?

Of the choices given, I would rather stay with just reporting spam and leaving the rest the same.

I cannot support either option.  In my opinion, this site has other more important issues for concern!

I like reporting spam!!!  Please don't change it to #1 or #2 -- that one is too much work and hard on my eyes  :-)

100 responses and I did not see the usual spam for handbags, drugs, or dating services. How did you do that?

On the other hand, should I report #17?

Every so often I'll see spam, but haven't noticed it being pervasive.  I think #2 is the best choice.  Would hate to restrict access to the platform by legitimate guests.

Please don't!  I am lucky not to get the spam (maybe it's my virus software) but trying to ready to codes much less type them in every time to enter a comment?  No way!

Kerrie, I'm in the neither group...  While it's a pain (moreso for some than others) I too wouldn't want to see comments not accepted.  And the captcha on every comment would get old real fast...  I like Phillip's suggestion!! (#18)

Well, I'm sure you already have made a decision, but I'm with many of the others that I don't care for either option.  I don't seem to get spammed that much but maybe it's because I don't get a ton of comments? -Kasey

seems to me that as long as when you hit "report concern" someone deletes the mess and futher blocks that poster it will slow down.  it's a pain, I don't see it often, but always hit "report a concern" when I do.

I vote for #2, its not too hard to type in a few letters. We are typing as we comment anyway. What is the difference?

Hopefully you will not go with either option.  If anything, perhaps the captcha for unregistered comments.
