Do you ever wonder whether or not there is an ongoing storm brewing at our Capitol?

Are you sick and tired of waking up every morning wondering, “What am I going to do today, and why am I doing it? I was at the TEXAS ASSOCIATION of REALTORS® luncheon in Austin yesterday. I’ve been in Austin the last few days staying current on political issues.  I think Joe Straus, Speaker of the House for the State of Texas said it best when he said, “Because Home ownership matters."

Like most people, I need a home to live, food, health care benefits, clothes, transportation, ongoing education, savings, retirement, and an opportunity to live within my means. I am not prepared to live within the President’s plan for economic growth and deficit reduction. My buck stops here!

In the past, I’ve done my share of renting. I know what it’s like to give more of my money to live in a place with less square footage, management rules and regulations, strange maintenance people coming into my home, landlords without faces or hearts, rent increases, and lack of privacy within a complex that has doors slamming, people walking and talking too loud, or a rental home that doesn’t have adequate heat, air, insulation, water, covered parking, storage, or privacy.

When I bought my home more than 15 years ago, things were different. My income was better. I had a job that offered annual pay increases, promotional opportunities, health care benefits, profit sharing, and retirement savings. All of that changed after 9/11.

As a Texas Realtor®, life hasn’t been better, it’s just been different. The Texas legislature is facing a $20 billion budget shortfall. However, without grassroots efforts, I know that our future is not very bright. That’s why I’m a member of the Realtor® Party.

Living within my means has been the hardest and most challenging thing I have ever had to do. As a Realtor®, I wake up every morning unemployed. I have lived like this for a long time. However, the rewards I receive are because of the relationships I build with the people who know and believe that home ownership matters.

Luck is what happens when opportunity transpires. Every day I have to be prepared for whatever comes my way. I get involved in my local government. I know who I want to vote for, and why I want to vote for them. When it comes to politics, I know who I won’t be voting for. I will stay abreast of the Real Estate issues that impact my livelihood, including the people who are near and dear to my heart.

As a graduate of the TEXAS ASSOCIATION of REALTORS® LEADERSHIP PROGRAM, I adhere to a higher standard of ethics. I know that foreclosures and short sales are here to stay for a long time. I don’t like it. I will not tolerate it. My reality is people do matter more than the $3 trillion in net deficit over the next 10 years. People need what I need – a home, food, health care benefits, transportation, jobs, and home security. For this reason, I am staying involved in what’s going on in my local government and Washington. D.C... I will be serving as Chair of Government Affairs at my local Board of Realtors, and I will be identifying and setting up candidate interviews. I will be a resource for Real Estate issues that are tearing up the fabric of the American souls. I will not stand for the political crises in our government that has continued to make problems worse.

What can you do to help? If you are an eligible, registered voter, you need to vote. If you moved within the last year, and you have not registered to vote at your new address you need to do it now. If you are a registered voter, but you haven't been voting, now is the time to get involved.

Carl & Ceil,

Thanks for your wise comments. The voter registration is a simple process. All one has to do is answer a few questions, 1) Are you a United States Citizen? 2) Will you be 18 years of age on or before election day?

New applicant? Change of Address? Request for a Replacement card.

Fill in your Last Name, First Name, Middle Initial, Former Name, Residence Address, City, State, Zip, Date of Birth, Gender, Telephone Number, Drivers License Number or Personal ID #. Then affirm that you are a resident of this country and a U.S. Citizen, have not been finally convicted of a felony, or if a felon, have completed all your punishment including any term of incarceration, parole, supervision, period of probation, or have been pardoned and have not been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote; then sign your signature.

It's so easy - and it's worth it!

I would love to meet you and other Texas Realtors there next year.

Patricia, In the last Primary in September only 12% of voters showed up in St. George...so much for supporting the community and making a difference! I take my voting privileges very seriously and do have a voice - I use it too! Okay, I'll step down off my soap box now!

James, thanks for your vote of confidence. I do think 2012 is going to be a pivotal year in our history books. We have the power to put the right people into our local governments, and the best qualified leaders this country so desperately needs into the Senate, the House of Representatives, Congress, and the ability to elect the next President of the United States of America.

By getting involved and staying abreast of the issues and concerns, we stand a better chance to get things right. But it takes a lot of people, a lot of qualified citizens to get out there to vote for the best candidates. All of our lives depend on it. This is no laughing matter.

Politics can continue to scare us all to death - or make us stronger.

Ron & A,

There's something about credibility. What the world needs now more than ever, is someone they can trust. We do not need people in public office, in the media, or on Wall Street who manipulates our minds and our psyches to believe as they wish us to believe, or to act, the way they want us to act.

We need leadership mastery - not someone who will lead us by our noses and empty our savings, checking, and retirement accounts. None of us deserve to weep anymore. We have the power to vote them in; vote them out!

I've always been good with a broom - how about you?

Ellen,

You are making a great difference in your community! I cheer you on!

I think one of the worst things we can do right now, is to not vote. The greatest risk of all is to let things continue, not get involved, have a voice, refuse to get involved, or do nothing when something needs to be done because it MUST be done!

I am tired of people who have millions of dollars to run campaigns, but no heart, soul, conscious, or knowledge how to run a country. Have you noticed that some of the greatest leaders of all time were humble people, not rich, or arrogant either. They did not mouth the words that caused people to clap and cheer, they spoke with their eyes, their hearts, and they LISTENED to what the people wanted - then they delivered their promises.

Roy,

Have you ever thought about running for office? I think you'd make a great politician, plus I do believe you'd have at least 2,000 or more supporters from AR alone!

Thanks Kathy!

You brightened my day. I appreciate getting to know you as a direct result of ActiveRain.

Hi Patricia, thank you for writing this and making a difference!  When it comes to voting, too many people are lethargic, disinterested or feel the other person will do it already.  I always say, if you don't vote you also cannot complain as you got exactly what you asked for.

Hi Silvia, what a beautiful comment. What you say, is true. I don't think many people realize how privileged we are to have the right to vote. As a Realtor, I want to protect property owner rights. The political landscape does not look good - somebody has to put their dukes up, it might as well be me! What we choose to ignore can have significant consequences.
