Do you Dojo?

Ok, even if you don’t practice martial arts and could care less, stay with me on this post, it can change your life without a single kick or chop.

What is a Dojo? It is the practice hall for martial arts.

Here’s why it’s important to you personally and your career.

Most of us are used to practicing the things we are already fairly good at. We practice to polish our strengths.

But martial artists go to a Dojo to learn and work on their weaknesses. If you are in hand to hand combat, it doesn’t matter how good you are at a few things if you have glaring weaknesses your opponent can exploit.

A martial artist rejoices when a worthy opponent reveals an area they need to work on. Improving in that area might save their life.

What are the areas in your personal and professional life that your competition can or already is exploiting? What are your weaknesses that are limiting your personal and professional success?

This is where you click away from this post. We don’t want to think about the things we aren’t good at. It is hard enough to keep our nose above water. But maybe it is our weaknesses that are dragging us down and keeping our nose just above water.

I had always planned to go to college. Everyone in our family went to college. I didn’t give much thought about what to major in until my senior year of high school. One night at dinner I asked my Dad, who was a surveyor for the county, what he had majored in. I was expecting an answer, such as math or engineering, that somehow related to his vocation.

He shocked me with his answer. He had majored in and received a degree in English. What?

My Dad (blessed to still have him) was born in 1917 and always lived in rural parts of Oklahoma and New Mexico. He often attended one room schools. People in those communities didn’t tend to use the Queen’s English and he was exposed to limited writing.

Entering college, Dad knew his weakest subject was English so he chose that to major in. Unbelievable!

My Dad’s example and learning the purpose of the Dojo have transformed my personal and business life.

Yes I still try to learn new things and polish the things I have a knack for. But I also spend time considering those areas where I most need to improve. I find it helpful to ask others for their written (don't ask for verbal feedback) input (and wrap heavy padding around your ego, asking others can hurt but it is very helpful).

Want to use your time to the best advantage? May I propose that spending time on our weaknesses will produce far more valuable results than putting a slight polish on those things you already do well.

To your weakness!

PS: To all of my martial arts friends. I have great respect for you and whatever form of martial arts you embrace. Yes, I know that the Dojo covers many more aspects than just the one I mentioned. If you feel the need to set me straight, blast away by email, not comment, thanks.
