The Love Rock on My Desk

Okay, I'm going out on a limb here.... my first blog..... (other than responding to a few)..... Write about something on my desk you say..... so here goes.

I have sitting here on my desk a rock from one of our local beaches.   It is shaped like a heart, painted red with the words LOVE painted on it.     I love this rock.  It warms my heart every time I look at it.

My daughter has minimal means and little discretionary income.   She is a single mom raising two teenage boys.   My birthday was rolling around earlier this month and she was feeling bad that she didn't have money to get me something for my birthday.    You know how that goes, no matter what you say, you can't erase that sad feeling at not being able to do some of those simple things.

I asked her to go to the beach and pick out a rock, paint it and write "Nonny's Garden" on it.   I was looking for some fun things to put in my garden and thought that would be nifty.    She showed up with a box of rocks all painted in fun colors and themes.   Of course, one does say "Nonny's Garden"  another with my birth sign, yet another shapped like an egg painted like an Easter Egg, a Nome..... and finally this beautiful one shaped like a heart.

I get complements on it all the time.  It is those simple things that mean the most in life.   A simple rock shaped like a heart, painted red with LOVE on it means the world to me.

When I look at it, I am inspired by her grit and love and warmth.    Yes, I have a lovely daughter indeed.

Hi Linda.

Thanks again for your commenting on my blog.

Congratulations on your first post. It was very nice. I think that rock is one of the most expensive things you will treasure for ever. Even the most expensive watch, or car can be replaced. That little rock on your desk can't be replaced.

Not everybody had children. Not many have a good relationship with their children. Money, health, prestige, etc are temporary. Love from our family is an eternal gift.

Thanks for you comments on my blog.   I don't think of myself as a writer and this blog thing is ohhh so new to me.  (I'm a little slow to catch on)  I try to be thoughtful about those blogs that I respond to.   The Love Rock may seem so silly to many, but to me, it is a true Treasure.  No expensive gift could outdo that one.  Values follow us though life in all aspects of our lives... personally and professionally.  I have been stepping outside my own box in responding and posting here.   I have had the good fortune of getting to know some truly wonderful people.

So they say........ here's the irony for me..... my long secret desire has always been to be an author - to write..... and I get on here and feel...... eeeeeekkkkkkk     Do I really have something original to offer?   I'm sure I will get to that, but in the meantime, I can live vicariously through wonderful bloggers like you.

thanks for your words of encouragement.

WOW!!! I want a heart-shaped rock that says 'love'. What a special gift. You are blessed!

Thanks Elizabeth.... it is special indeed.   See, it's the little things in life that mean so much... so it circles back to how important it is to take time to smell the roses..... you know, ever since I wrote this post, I have an even deeper connection to my little rock... it really is so very cool.....

So when are you going on vacation again?  How did  you finally fill those free hours?   Hope it was good practice for the next time around!

Remember - heart shaped rocks come in all disguises!     I suspect you have one in another form.

Linda, that is such a great post!  It is heart warming and precious!  You can not buy that kind of sentimental item.  Have a great day!

Linda, I would recommend you blog this out and post it in different groups so other people will find.  Best Wishes!

Ernie - thank you for your comment..... I wrote it as a challenge to myself on the group - no writer's block allowed.   thanks for all your encouragement.   I am going to work on my next blog.... I already have my topic.  Hopefully this weekend, when things settle down a bit, I will have the time to sit down and post.

Linda,

just write what comes to mind... the good thing about this place is that there are NO editors that will go line by line and ask you to re-write  :)

Mehmet - thanks.  It is always hard to get that spy off the ole shoulder, isn't it?   I had actually just posted a question on blogging that I think you can help me with.    Do you blog Johnny on the spot, or do you compose in Word and copy/paste.   There is no draft option so sometimes, there are lots of interruptions before finishing a thought - know what I mean?   Also, how do you get the images and graphics in the posts?  When I click on insert, it appears it has to be an image already on my computer, which makes me think they are imported in Word first and then copied into here.   Thanks for any suggestions on how to make this easy, not painful...... grins

Hi Linda, Boy - you should have placed a box of Kleenex box with your post. So much HEART! You're off to a tremendous start. Speaking from someone who has helped our clients (Meg Zoller) with blogging here at AR, I take great satisfaction when they take a tip and go hog wild.

Going forward, write a good mix of post for your peers, post for your consumers and post for Google. Then sit back and watch your search placement and clients begin to line up. Welcome to the Rain!

Bobby, thanks for your comments and encouragements.    This post was a step off the cliff for me.... taking that ole spy off my shoulder and truly writing from my heart.  It was actually a challenge from "No Writer's Block Allowed" so I went for it.    I just finally posted my first "real" post on Power Point presentations which is a topic that I am sure many will have their own personal take on.  Gosh, if you coached Meg on her blogging techneiques on, then surely you can help me!  I am open to all suggestions!

Using your first post as a model, keep your post short and readable. I like how you used bullets to in your second post to give the eyes an opportunity to rest. Don't forget to salt and pepper images in your post to create interest. Look at some of Betty Cutler Favier's post. She does an excellent job with linking to her website for added Google power. Try to post interesting hyper-local information/events to Localism to attract your consumers. Remember - be an information provider and avoid being to salesy. I'm here if you have any questions.

Bobby, I love your post.  I went and read your blogs.   As I attempt to "enlighten" people on Power Point Presentations, I have so much to learn about blogging.  Everyone says to just jump in and do it and most of us learn by Batisim by Fire.   When I went back and looked at my own post  Art of The Power Point Presentation, on live blog, I was worried that it was too long and too wordy.  I have much to learn in this medium.   Feel free to offer any insights you have on my blog.  This is way too much fun, but I fear equally as easy to get carried away with.  (like the boring Power Point Presentation)

Thanks for your comments.

I agree Linda - a great and creative first post! I have a friend here who collects heart shaped rocks; she has quite a collection of them which she displays in various arrangements at her front door - she's a Scorpio - are you also? Even stone can turn into a heart!
2:11pm • #18

Deborah - I LOVE that concept - "Even a stone can turn into a heart!"  I bet your friend's collection is beautiful.   Libra here - supposed to be balanced.... ahhhh some days more so than others - grins.

PS - who thinks up these secret graphics anyway?   Are they real words?   Time to grab the dictionary.

Libra can also be the struggle for balance, since it is so important to them.

The graphics are interesting real words yes, but obscure sometimes botanical and foriegn terms. Sometimes I even know what they are!

Jaime's stones are lovely as she's arranged them so - you fee-el the loo-ove. Yes stones into hearts! hmm

Hey Deborah

I always thought I had a pretty good vocabulary, but I am finding that these graphic are really putting me to the test!   I'm keeping my dictionary at arm's length from now on.

I'd love to see some pics of jamie's stones if you have them....

Sorry Linda no shots of Jaime's heart rocks. Heart rocks - that could be a title for something - your title here is great - pulled me in!

I'm not technologically and digitally advanced; the shots I've uploaded are from hard copy - the old fashioned form. I am that way with some things - don't own a micro-wave! The only time I did was when I had my cafe'.

I love some of the graphic words - there one, bunya-bunya - doesn't that just sound awesome? like a literary expression? ;) teehee.....

I really like coco-plum - yum.....

pistachio - the present one - we know that one - yum - I was on a Greek island famous for pistachio - Paros I think....

12:25pm • #22

Hey Deborah,

Trust me, I relate to that digital savvy..... lock me in a cell for a year and I could not come up with what most do in moments.   (I do have micro-wave though)

bunya-bunya.....???? I don't know  Deb- I had two bunionectomies

I LOVE pistachios and Greece is my big fantasy trip.... Perhaps after London!!!

Bignay???  Is that Pig Latin for something????????

Linda - I also have several rocks, but the best rock story I have is when the local Habitat for Humanity was building their first local home, I was assisting the family.  They also wanted to do something tangible for all the people who so generously had laboured winter and summer to build their young family a home.  I suggested we collect rocks from the building site and clean them up and paint them.  We collected over 100 rocks of all shapes and sizes and brought them to my house to clean, then spray painted them gold. Then the children drew a heart on each one.  They were given out at the grand opening and ribbon cutting.  The volunteers were thanked from the bottom of the family's heart for having 'hearts of gold' Very touching.

HI Kathy ~   Thank you for sharing such lovely story.   Those rocks will forever be a reminder of their generosity and I'm willing to bet that most have it displayed where others will see it and comment.  Each time their story is told, it helps spread the idea of giving to the listener.    I LOVE that.   Rocks  ROCK!
