What Do You REALLY Know About Mr. Herman Cain?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Criado Realty 0548772

While visiting my politically savvy aunt & uncle this past weekend my uncle said to me and my husband, "I'm curious, what do two highly educated, intelligent, business owners know about Mr. Cain?" Great question!

I commented that I like Cain but not sure he has a well rounded background and expressed concern about his electability.  Cain would have to be uber qualified to compensate and I'm not so sure that being the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza is sufficient.

Uncle Rodney handed me his bio.  Being the integrity person that I am, I did a little research on my own and can now validate the bio and I invite you to do the same.

Please don't let party, or how your family votes, be the reason you vote.  It's about finding  the most capable, diversified (experience), qualified person.  I had another candidate in mind but thinking my new man is Cain.

HERMAN CAIN BIOGRAPHY

Herman Cain grew up in Atlanta, Georgia with loving parents and little else. His father worked three jobs—as a janitor, a barber and a chauffeur—and his mother was a domestic worker. Even though these jobs required hard work and little glamor, his parents knew this life was better than the dirt farms upon which they grew up. They also knew that this hard work was the key to achieving their American Dreams.

Herman’s parents had two dreams. First, they wanted to own their own house.  Secondly, they wanted both of their children to graduate from college. During the segregation era in the Deep South, these aspirations might have seemed lofty, but they knew that if they kept their faith in God, faith in themselves and faith in the greatest country on the Earth, they could achieve.

The first dream was realized in a modest brick house on Albert Street in Atlanta, Georgia. After years of saving from his many jobs, Herman’s father surprised the whole family, even his wife, by purchasing a home for their family. The second dream was realized when Herman graduated from Morehouse College with a degree in mathematics in 1967. His brother, Thurman, would go on to graduate from Morris Brown College.

Inspired by the work ethic and character of his parents, Herman continued his education by earning his Master’s degree in computer science from Purdue University while working full-time developing fire control systems for ships and fighter planes for the Department of the Navy. Though Herman enjoyed using his talents as a civilian employee for the Navy, he gravitated towards the culture of business.

Herman returned to his home of Atlanta to begin working as a computer systems analyst for the Coca-Cola Company. After considerable success at Coca-Cola, he moved to the Pillsbury Company. Within a short period of time, Herman rose to position of Vice President. Although the comforts of a corner office on the 31st floor of a majestic corporate building seemed satisfying, Herman knew that he needed a challenge.

He became the Regional Vice President of Pillsbury’s Burger King division. This meant starting from the “ground up,” dodging grease fires and broiling hamburgers. Herman was assigned to lead a low performing region of 450 of their restaurants. Within three years, it became the best performing region in the company.

Energized by overcoming the many obstacles of his job at Burger King, Herman took on the biggest challenge of his career. He accepted the call to become the President and CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, a company that was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. In just 14 months, Herman returned Godfather’s to profitability and he led his management team to a buyout of the company.

His professional successes garnered the respect and admiration of industry peers who named him the President of the National Restaurant Association. Under Herman’s administration, the group grew significantly and began to lobby for the interests of America’s restaurateurs and small business owners.

In 1994, as head of the National Restaurant Association, he had the opportunity to speak with President Clinton during a nationally televised town hall meeting. Here, Herman challenged the President regarding the impact on businesses if his health care overhaul proposal were passed. President Clinton attempted to assure him and the millions of viewers watching at home that his legislation would not harm American business owners and their employees.

Herman was skeptical. “Quite honestly Mr. President, your calculations are incorrect,” he said. “In the competitive marketplace, it simply doesn’t work that way.” His words echoed across America, and Newsweek named Herman Cain the primary saboteur of Hillarycare.

Through these and other appearances on behalf of the National Restaurant Association, Herman began working with business leaders across all sectors of the American economy. This led to his acceptance of a position on the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, and he was subsequently elected their chairman. In this role, he analyzed economic conditions in the region and notified the Federal Reserve of how their policies should respond.

Most recently, he hosted a radio talk show, “The Herman Cain Show,” on Atlanta’s WSB 750 AM/ 95.5 FM. He serves as a regular contributor on several broadcast networks and as a keynote speaker at conferences and events around the nation.

Despite the many professional commitments of his life, Herman continues to enjoy most the time spent with family and friends. As his children got married and had their own children, he knew that he had an extraordinary obligation to do what he could to make this a safe and prosperous nation for them. The paramount joys in his life are his wife, Gloria, his children and his grandchildren.

Erica - So glad you open to researching your options and not just following a pack.  I'm an Indepenent and I research information before taking a position.  Not decided yet, still researching.

Christine - Yes, so true, a slippery slope. I am okay with people not following me just because I chose to share something insightful. I'm not saying anything that isn't fact, no opinion. It's for each to decide who is the best candidate.  Our country is truly in a very big mess. Today, the Washington Post announced that Obama's healthcare plan has some major financial issues with the long term care package and President Obama will be announcing the withdrawel of CLASS program.  Democrat, Republican, or Libertarian - that monster package might sound like a great way to get healthcare to all but is it constituional? Is it somethign we can afford in the long run? Do we want our government who can't seem to handle Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, banks, to also be managing our healthcare? I am truly concerned about the future of America. All I'm asking for people to quit thinking along party lines and to think about solutions to some very serious problems.

I have one subsriber that I exchange politics with via email. We are on complete opposite sides and are good friends on Activerain. He's made me seroiusly consider why I believe and think what I do, but he does it very intellectually an not some stupid emotional thought or life-long ideology with out reason manner of communicating.  He too has serously explored his way of thinking.  Its' about information exchange and respect, that's all.

Great background Cathy. I found Herman Cain's coldness to the plight of the umemployed concerning. Plus he has not governed politically before. I think 9-9-9 may be better than the current tax code but too radical to implement and the 9% national sales tax hurts low income people the most with their consumption. But many good ideas to consider.

Gary - Thanks for noticing. The ghosts gave some headaches to the readers. My take is this, there is no such thing as 100% so we have to go with the best overall option, whatever that might be for you. I was just shocked to find out how diversified he is and educated that I felt the need to share.  Thanks for taking the risk to comment - LOL!

I have to reiterate Gary #5's concerns. That is an issue for me too, but it's always important to learn more and stay informed - and, with an open mind. I appreciate the information and his bio - but, a bio is generally a flattering synopsis of someone's history. SIM city has the 9-9-9 plan - you know, the video game. :)

I need to keep learning more - that's the only way to vote with a good grasp of candidates and the concepts. I haven't ruled him out - there's a lot to like - and having a good grasp of business and how to be profitable isn't a bad quiver to have in the bag. Thanks for being smart and inquisitive - I like that about you.

It's still early and the candidates are still jockeying for position so anything can still happen.  His lack of political play may be a stumbling block but only time will tell.  As a businessman he seems to have his act together.

Hi Cathy, My daughter asked me a couple of weeks ago if I knew who Herman Cain was since she knew that I had attend Morehouse College in Atlanta from 1965 to 1966. I didn't remember him, and he was most likely a an upper classman, and I didn't get to know many juniors or seniors while I was there.

But, my response to her when she gave me his background as you have clearly stated in your blog was that he might be what our country needs, since he has not been an politician on Capitol Hill yet. Unfortunately, we always look at the Leadership of our Nation to blame for what's going on. I plan to take a closer look at Mr. Cain and learn more about what his solutions are to get America Back on Track.

Glad to see all the comments; I know many don't like to talk politics -it's easy to get offened and to offend.

Gary & Debb - Mr. Cain has taken a hard line on many issues.  Whether voters agree or disagree, the fact is, he is attempting to get people into the mindset of being self-reliant, self-respect, self- sufficient rather than many (not all) who expect the government to take action and do something for them. My husband and I came from families with no education; out of 4 parents only one graduated from high school; the other 3 had GEDs.  His family moved as much as military during the 70's to remain employed; Scott lived in 4 states from 13 -18 years old.  I grew up "military poor"  - we had a roof, food, medical, & garage sale or Kmart clothes.  To eat out 1-2 times per month me and my brothers collected cans to eat at McDonal'ds or my favorite, Arby's - depending on coupons.  We were poor.  I do missionary work and I understand real poverty.

Dinesh D'souza says - "I'd rather be poor in American than middle class in most other countries."

Tom Friedman (NY Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize winning author) - "The reason other countries are surpassing us is because we aren't motivated to make real change. When we are competing with countries whose middle class lives in a wooden shack, and our middle class lives in a small framed house with a/c boxes, who do you think has the strongest work ethic and willingness to make massive and aggressive change in lifestyle?"

Jerry - Wow, I forgot about your fabulous college background.  Old man I had to laugh when I saw 1965 - 1966 I wasn't born yet!  I know I can say that cause you love me :)

I was rather surprised at Mr. Cain's diversified and impressive background, and that he has some experience with the Federal Reserve System - another broken system.

I truly think what happened is that the Internet and efficiencty resulted in catastrophic globalization and our consumer based economony didn't make any adjustments.  We continued to spend because we thought the upward mobility we experienced as a country would be on going. But the outsides (developing nations) were window shopping.  They took the reigns and displaced many of our workers. I'm not one to sit around and mope or blame. I take action, and that's what I'm looking for - somebody who is willing to do some unpopular things in order to clean house and fix our country.

Good for your daughter for taking the time to research.  I researched Obama and will leave it at that - I don't want to offend, but people really should research.
