Computer HandshakeDo you know what it means to find a person's channel? No, not like tune into Channel 2 on the TV and there they appear. No, not sit across from some psychic or fortune teller with a crystal ball between you, hum Kumbaya and channel someone from the dead or across the country or world.

A person's channel is their preferred method to hear what you are saying and RESPOND. That key word in that sentence is respond.

Find the channel, then hammer away at it!!!

I do not know why this is the way it is. But it is an observation I have noted. Here are some example channels of communication:

  1. Land line phone
  2. Cell phone
  3. Text / SMS instant messaging of some sort
  4. Email
  5. Tweet
  6. Facebook commenting
  7. Letter, card, or note in the mail
  8. Fax
  9. In Person meeting

You will find one method, except for a handful of us that respond to all of them and send out in all ways, is DOMINANT with most people. Also the dominant method varies. Some parents text their kids a lot but email or tweet or Facebook comment friends. Don't laugh with the In Person meeting possibly being dominant. One of my clients in her 80's, I delivered all contracts in person to her house as well as hand delivered follow up communication as she didn't like the phone or use email. Bonus for me, lemon cookies and tea. Smile.

You will know WHICH method is the effective one a) cause it works and b) you will get a response MOST of the time. I say most of the time cause other things are going on in people's lives and there are just these millions of reasons they STILL will ignore you. WHICH HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU BTW. With REALTORS you will be amazed IN GENERAL how effective a text is when you ABSOLUTELY want that quick answer. Even during a person's lunch they will a lot of the time get back with you.

No one method is guaranteed with anyone, but try them all until the QUALITY of your connection with people, best they will let you into their life, matches up with the frequency of the communication you want from them.

Communication like love is a two way street TO WORK and some days you will be frustrated feeling like you are talking to a wall. But FINDING that dominant channel your wall days will be less than using the other minor out of favor methods. Oh and one thing on voice mail too, so many people just ignore it these days sad to say, but leave at least ONE message anyway for grins. Who knows? That 1 in 20 person might ACTUALLY call you back or get back to you with YOUR fave channel. Good luck with this Sherlock Holmes task I have assigned you. It really is the way the world works these days !!!

Woltal - I guess the more adept one is at various means of communication in this day and age, the better their ability to find that channel.  Seems living by one alone could be rather difficult both now and going forward.

And about Sharon and that hammer ... ?:)

Jason: One method seems to be dominant though for some many ways work if not all. Sharon likes thumping me with her bat if I step out of line. Look out yourself.

That channel may not even be what the person thinks it is.  Another reason for us to listen carefully

I always ask my clients what their preferred method of communication is, Gary.  It is crucial these days.  Thanks.

Gary, I look at this is little more basically, and it is partly from what adjectives or verbs people use....whether they are auditory or visual in their thinking. For example, people will say, I hear what you're saying, or I see what you mean. They are telling you how they communicate by what they communicate back to you in response.

I CAN NOT imagine if someone's method of communication would be by FAX, if everytime I have to communicate with someone only way is FAX, then that would really put me out of my comfort zone. (I will do it anyway...)
