The 6 things you don’t want to forget about Content when writing Press Releases!
1. Content has to cover the 5 W’s:
- Who
- What
- Where
- When
- Why
2. The story line is NOT a sales pitch. The purpose in creating a PR is to provide information in an easy-to-use format for the media to publish.
3. Write to your primary target: They are editors and journalists not the average home buyer. Through them you reach the public eye.
4. Credibility: Use endorsements from a “non-biased” source and don’t forget to get permission.
5. Never Use Industry Jargon: Use language that your primary target understands.
6. Make it timely: If possible tie your PR with current events.
STYLE of your content
There are many styles so to say, I have read many press releases but the most important thing above all is the voice. USE THE ACTIVE VOICE! You don’t want your readers to fall asleep!
To improve the style of your PR don’t forget to:
- Be concise: Press releases that are short, direct, and to the point are more effective at getting your story across.
- Proof read: Avoid run on sentences, unorganized thoughts, and grammar mistakes.
- Follow the KISS principle: “Keep It Simple, Stupid!”
- Organize your thoughts: Make sure your press release has a logical flow and that your thoughts are logically organized. This might sound like a no-brainer but, I am always surprised by how unorganized and jumbled PRs can be. Your readers won’t re-read sentence to try to understand the point you are trying to convey.
