The Fantastic Lochside Trail is Great for Hiking/Cycling/Walking at Any Time of Year!  Today was a lovely sunny Sunday, with many people picking up their plump pumpkins ready for Halloween.

The Lochside Trail runs from Sidney to Victoria and is an easy 29km long. Originally an old railway line, now converted into a recreational trail, this lovely walking, biking, birdwatching, running trail passes through beaches, farmlands, a nature sanctuary, old wooden trestle bridges, passing by horses, fat pigs, a remote-control Aeroplane Club, the Heritage Acres Society grounds and urban neighbourhoods, as well as a super ocean-side view.

Cycling along the Lochside Trail

The Trail is partly paved and partly gravel and you can easily get on or off it anywhere between Sidney and Victoria.

If visitors want to experience the trail, bikes are available for rent in Victoria, with maps of both the Galloping Goose Trail and the Lochside Trail. You'll see more of the area than if you were motoring along the highway of course, and what better way to enjoy southern Vancouver Island, just about year round!

It's nice to see that they didn't just let an old railway line go to waste and made good use of it. We need more initiatives like this across the country David. the whole population benefits.

Hi Kristin - it's always fun on the Trail - I especially enjoy "family" cycling along it.

Hi Malcolm - yes, the old railway line is now used by everyone - there is only one problem these days - there is now so much traffic travelling between Victoria and Sidney, that a train would be ideal to get many people to either the airport or the ferries! Maybe we'll get a rapid transit system next, as long as it's not along the Lochside Trail!

David - old rail way right of ways make great walking trails ..... they are an easy walk for just about anyone as they are flat and hard some have even been resurfaced to make them fully accessable

Kathy - you're absolutely right - the only problem these days is that we need some form of light rapid transit between downtown Victoria and Sidney, and Victoria to  Nanaimo or further up-island, and it seems that the old railway lines would be perfect for that.
