These young ladies between the ages of 63 – 98 inspired me.

All of them are members of Emmanuel Lutheran Church at 800 Tamiami Trail Venice FL 34285. They were retired and spending their time to do something good for others.

The name of the young lady’s group is the Dorcas Quilting Mission. It started around 1982 and the current Co-leaders are Mrs. Jean Price and Mrs. Jackie Miller took over in 2001. The group has 43 members. They meet every Monday from 9:00am to 12:00noon from Mid-October to end of April at the church. Also, much quilting work is done at home by the many ladies.

The work of these dedicated ladies include design and create, cutting, ironing, sewing, and packing for shipping. While working, they enjoy each other’s company and fellowship. Church members donated all the fabric.

 

The amazing production of 582 quilts was made in 2010 and distributed to the following countries:

 

Armenia, Azerbaijan, Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of Congo,

Djibouti, Georgia, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya,

Lebanon, Mauritania, Nicaragua, Niger, Occupied Palestinian Territories,

Pakistan, Philippines, Serbia, Sierra Leone, Syria Tanzania and Thailand.

654 quilts were made in 2011 and they are waiting for the list of countries to be shipped to.  Out of 90 participating churches in the Florida Bahamas Synod, the Dorcas Quilting Mission of Venice Florida was # 1.

Kwee, this is such a wonderful localism post. I hope these ladies are training others to keep this beautiful tradition going. It is a cultural gift from the early 1900's in America.
