How To Be A "Successful" Blogger on Active Rain

(Hold your cursor over each photo for additional thoughts!)

Always carry an umbrella big enough to share

Not so long ago, a "newbie", or at least one that doesn't post too often, published a query asking how to improve their blog.

They wanted to know examples of fine blogs, what was eye-catching, and overall feedback regarding what makes a good blog and how should they change theirs.

Don't be afraid of critique or spirited interaction

Wanting to help, I spent SOME time compiling an answer, leaving links to 7 of the some of my favorite successful bloggers I regularly run into here in the rain.

I went back to see others' ideas as well this morning and was surprised to see no other answers.  Several thoughts hit me at once.

Don't be afraid to ask a bigger blogger than you for help!

In answer to your query for suggestions, Mr.Ms. Newbie:

1.  Post your blog in more groups for visibility. Be a member of the Newbie Group.  Attend Rain University! Attend Rain Camp online!

2.  If you want more comments, comment on others' blogs first to establish rapport.

3.  Comment on your comments - especially those that took time to write a thoughtful reply.  Your future readers also notice whether or not you personalize your comment string with your own replies.

4. Add photos.  If you don't believe photos work, take a look at some of those that populate their blogs with amazing photography and video.  Graphics work.

5. Blog consistently.  Twice monthly isn't going to have your readers checking on a regular basis to see what else you have shared -- because you haven't!

Communication isn't just important in the workplace - it's also important online, socially, and in your personal relationships.  Interaction is a key to success.  Blog consistently, comment religiously, and set goals.  Success in the rain will come to you in buckets.

Raining Success!

Hi Ebrahim - I enjoy posts with pictures - they draw me in.

Hi Valarie - Welcome to Active Rain!!  Two featured posts already - way to go.  I will come and visit your blog!

Rosalind - you can't go wrong with Bill and Liz!

Hi Andrew - I agree - residents always want to read about localism.

Hi Mike - Time is a factor, but a jumpstart on it in my opinion is to comment consistently.

Kristin - Sounds like you are doing a wonderful localism job!

Sandy - what a great Halloween photo!

Lea Ann - I really appreciate your re-blog!

Manny Reynaldo - I would recommend asking a SEO expert those kinds of questions.  David Bruce Jr. and Mike Mueller are two that come to mind.

Maya - WOW - ask and you shall receive!!!

Michael Bolton - So I supposed you've heard all the singing jokes...

Steve W.  Thanks so much for your kind words!

Maureen - I don't hover comment all of the time outside of SEO repetition, but some times it's lots of fun!

Delores - Welcome and good success to you.  Sharing your opinion in comments like you do will set you on your way to great relationships!

Hi Christine - Always appreciate your comments.  Thank you.

Joan - I think you'll find the more that you leave comments, the more you'll get response.  Sharing that you are a newbie will have readers coming over to see what you have to say!

Hi Tammie - aw schucks!  Thanks!

See Richard - you are setting the perfect example , as always, of communication within comments.  Thanks for coming back!  I am excited about the feature - most of my posts are about localism so that yellow star is shy!

Thank you Janet - I think you do an awesome job of blogging and your use of photos with captions is eye-catching and easy to follow.  You are a natural instructor!

Hi Cheryl - I have to admit it is easier for me to "interact" online than in mixers!  I am a one-on-one communicator!

Scott - that is so true.  And a great picture can draw a person in that isn't familiar with your words.  Also, labeled photos show up in Google results - so it's a tri-fecta!!

Hi Gary - I like your ideas on selling and packaging.  You really drive home a point.

Mike - you are a content King.  I was happy to come across your blog a few weeks ago.  Sounding boards are invaluable!

Thank you Gary - You are very good with catchy headline that bring folks in.  I have to work on those!  ($3.00 House, Liar Loans, etc...)

Thanks Eileen.  It was actually kids waiting at a bus stop - but they'd all taken cover!  It's a great memory photo of mine.  Love the rain - we all get so excited when it rains here in Tucson.

Thanks Mike - we met him on our way back from Albuquerque!

Thanks John - you are a fantastic, consistent, and thoughtful commenter and a perfect example of relationships found through Active Rain.  I am always pleased to receive your comments!

You are so clever.  I remember when Steven did the AR university class he always said use your picture names(the hover over name) the same name as your blog post.  Better SEO.  That's what I do, but I like your idea better.  Who cares are SEO?

Evelyn - yes, I hear its very good for SEO - however, sometimes I'm just about for fun.  :)

Thank you Lloyd - There's so many opportunities on AR for new bloggers and bloggers who need a little encouragement to find inspiration and education.  One of the big PERKS!

Excellent presentation of these tips; I especially like rolling over the photos for more idea.  It definitely added motivation for the reader.   Nothing could be truer than your advise to blog regularly.  I'm trying to be disciplined enough to publish on a consistent and predictable basis.

Hi Steve - thank you!  You are on the right track with Rainmaker status.  Sometimes it helps to save your ideas in draft form and then when you get ahead, you can space blog posts out a bit!

Hi Tatyana - you have a great blog.  I think the Active Rain University makes the learning curve a whole lot less steep.  It can be overwhelming even after one has been at it for awhile!

Emelyn, nice to meet you!  Thank you for visiting and I'll be sure to check out your blog.  :)

Great post Cara. The last photo says it all about the raining.  Very cool.  Comments on others blogs are always good to read.  Sometimes gets better than the blog.  But then a good blog will make for good comments.

Kevin - you're welcome - thanks for stumbling across my blog!

Marguerite - it does take time, doesn't it.  Some weeks it's hard to find the moments.

Janis - I like blogging - but I do have to get off the computer and do the business of real estate!!  Tough some times to make it all work simultaneously.

Ross - I can really get caught up reading the comments some times.  They can have a life of their own.  It's amazing how much knowlege, entertainment, or good rapport vibes one can pick up through Active Rain!

Thank you for your post. So far I mostly just read other peoples blogs just as a matter or prioritizing other new biz strategies and tasks and getting to know people and how and what they blog about. This month though I will get my blog up and running and have bookmarked your page to look at again. Thanks!

I think i get overwhelmed with ideas and just where to post and do everything!! all while.. selling real estate too. Of course I am enjoying this process of learning. It is a challenge I will say, but being a newbie, and seeing the potential here is adding some momentum to my business!  Thanks for the post!

Cara, Great reminder to Newbies and constant bloggers a like.

Communication and sharing both personal and business is a fine balance. And if you do not respond to your commenters how do they know if you agree, disagree or even acknowledge

Enjoy the day
