Okay - so the silly title made you look.  And this photo that I've been saving forever might have gotten your attention, too.

This is actually a serious article about a history-making bill (AB715) just signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.  California will lead the way for this new innovation in water conservation.  Assemblyman John H. Laird (D-Santa Cruz) says that over the next 10 years this change will save an estimated 8 billion gallons of water.  How?  By implementing dual flush toilets and waterless urinals.  The new toilets have two flush modes.  They use a full flush for solid waste and a half flush for liquid waste.

The bill requires that half the toilets sold in California by 2010 (and all by 2014) must meet the new standard.  The savings for an average household are pretty substantial.  In a newer home, the dual flush toilets can save approximately 5,000 gallons of water per year.  If toilets that are 1978 or older, an average family could save about 20,000 gallons of water per year.  If we take the an average savings of about 12,500 gallons per household and multiply by an area the size of a city like Laguna Woods of about 12,000 households - that would be an annual savings of  150 million gallons a year.  Now if they were also self-cleaning, too!

MSNBC has an interesting video about this history-making bill and a little more about how these toilets and urinals actually work.

28 Comments on Green Toilets ~ Taking a Closer Look

Something about the phrase "solid waste" that just grosses me out.

David - Yup, not the most tantilizing of topics, but sure important to the future of our environment.  Would you prefer effluent?

My house was built in 1997 and have often thought that it was time to switch my toliets out for more effecient ones.  I will have to do more research on this.  I would love to save on my water bill.

Marlene - That's quite an image! Thanks for a thought-provoking post. We all need to do our part to conserve our resources.

Linda - My home was completed in 1995.  We have low-flush toilets that are not very effective.  They may save on water, but we frequently have to flush twice.  That doesn't save anything.  I'm going to take a look at replacing my toilets for these new ones that offer two flushing options.  I think that they offer a great alternative and will save water to boot.

Tom - I thought th photo was hilarious.  I've saved it for the longest time.  Glad you liked the post.  Yes, it was astonishing to me how much we can save in resources and dollars by making a small investment that will actually not diminish the effectiveness, but will be a more efficient use of resources.

Great photo (where did you find it?)  I will bet that along with this new bill, there will be incentives (rebates) offered by the water districts to convert to them.  I wouldn't rush too quickly to get one now, unless you need one anyway.

Vicki - Glad you enjoyed the photo.  I can't remember where I got it.  I have paid subscriptions and some sites that offer non-copyrighted photos.  I agree, there will probably be some incentives in the future.  Thanks for stopping by.

Marlene - Thanks for bringing this to everyones attention.  Water conservation is such a needed thing and this will greatly help the cause.  I am glad that the Governor has set the standard with this bill.

Joe - Yes, isn't it amazing how much water we flush down the drain in every household every year?

In areas with water shortages, this could become a vital subject in the near future.

Eric - With all those beautiful Great Lakes and so many more lakes in Minnesota, this probably seems like a strange concern.  But, in Sothern California, most of our water actually gets shipped in from other states.  This measure will be a huge step in the right direction for us and will lead the way for other states like ours.  Thanks for stopping by.

I hope there will be a tax break or some type of reimbursement for those who purchase these toilets.  I also have heard that they don't flush that well and the sometimes it takes multiple flushes - so in the long run, there won't be the savings anticipated -- have you seen any information on this?

11/02/2007 11:02 PM by Joan Whitebook, ABR,e-Pro,CEBA Southern New Hampshire (Buyer's Option Realty Services)

Marlene, I just posted to my blog about the alarmingly low water levels in the Great Lakes recently.  I believe we're going to see widespread interest in water conservation all over the U.S. in the very near future.

11/02/2007 11:06 PM by Wayzata Lakes Realty: Eric Kodner Sells Luxury Homes

Joan - I have some of the low water flush toilets in my home.  And you are correct, sometimes they need to be flushed more than once.  It is my understanding the newer ones (they have two flushing cycles - liquid waste and solid waste) are supposed to be more efficient.  I would hope that there would be some incentives to purchasing the new models.

Eric - That scarcely seems possible!  I'll stop by your blog to check out your article.

Hi Marlene,  This sounds like good news!  I think it is a good idea.   Thanks for letting us know about it.

Marlene, Interesting blog and topic. There is a company called TOTO  that makes a High Efficency Toilet (HET) They have been installed in a new luxury condo here. Their ad claims they have: "the latest in flushing technology"

11/04/2007 05:53 PM by Mitchell Hall - Manhattan, NYC Luxury Real Estate (Coldwell Banker Previews International)

Stephanie - I think this will be a great stride toward water conservation---if they work effectively.

Marlene - Great news from California again! I am very jealous that you have such great energy policies out there! I am hoping for Michigan to pass some good policies soon! I did a blog a while back with a link to the "Clean Is Happy" advertisement! I died laughing the first time I saw it! Love the photo you provided! Thanks for the good information and links!

Mary - Thanks for stopping by to read.  It is exciting to be cutting edge with this legislation.  Now if we can just prove that it is effective more states will hop on the band wagon too.
