Fix It On the Cheap Part 2: More Finds from the Dollar Store

Welcome back! Last time, we started a series related to the fact that many central New Jersey home owners are doing a lot of little fixes around their homes in preparation for the chilly weather that's right around the corner. We noted that if you're like us, you don't want to have to play break-the-bank to make those small repairs! We turned to houselogic.com for ideas on how to make those repairs with terrific finds from your local 99¢ store. Today we offer our second tip; we'll present a new and different one in our upcoming blogs. Just remember: The impulse to buy more than you intended at the dollar store can be strong!

Our first tip was for repairing a scuffed countertop for less than $3. This was great, because no matter how small the “ding,” a scuff mark on a counter tends to become the focal point of either the kitchen or bathroom. Annoying, right? Of course, life is full of little annoyances – remember how you felt the last time you had a flat tire? Or reached into the fridge and discovered that some had left about an eighth of a cup of milk in the carton?

Ever had a torn window screen? Frustrating! Even the tiniest of holes becomes an open invitation for every insect in your neighborhood. The good news is that you don't need a handyman or a replacement screen to fix the problem. The perfect bug deterrent is at your local 99¢ store – if it's not already on hand in your bathroom cabinet. (Even if you DO have it, going to the dollar store is fun – you never know what you’ll find. Like cheap soda.

You're going to need clear nail polish (99¢) and two slightly dented cans of soda (99¢), making your total cash outlay a whopping $1.98.

If you're waiting for the “hard part,” it's not coming. All you need to do is apply the clear nail polish to both sides of the torn area. Slather it on so that it builds up a nice barrier. Then, enjoy your soda while you watch it dry transparently. That's it!

We'd love to hear from you – have you put off a small repair because of lack of time or because you thought it'd be too costly? Leave your comment below and tell us about it!

That's a hoot. I was trying to figure out what the dented soda cans were for... and wouldn't you know it: they were for me!

Emphasize the "clear" nail polish.  Have not heard of this fix before.

So what you are saying is this.  Clear nail polish has gone from stopping a run in your nylons to plugging the hole in your torn screen.  Pretty clever.  You can also use it to put on the thread of a loose button.  Keeps it stronger a little longer.
