Jay's Saturday Morning Haiku - 1

Jay's Saturday morning haiku - 1

The English form of the traditional Japanese Haiku includes any or all of the following:

  • The use of 17 syllables, in the form of three lines, with 5, 7 and 5 syllables respectively.  Some haiku may employ 10 - 14 syllables, but 17 is traditional.
  • The use of a season in the poem.
  • The use of a "cut word" or punctuation to set off and compare two images.

I intend to take something related to my home inspection adventures and show case it with a haiku every week.  Please enjoy this, my first one.  (I have already written two more, so I am loaded for a while!)

Come on to our pad.

You will have to stand up straight -

We lean together.

Sorry James!  I had never done that big lettering before.  I will figure out how to do it so it doesn't pop up the source code like that!

Good morning, Jay. H-m-m-m. Confucius say, second verse worst than first...

Hi Jay,

Are you showing the line too short as well as the tanks need to be moved each time they need to tie into a full tank? There should be enough line to hook into all three tanks without the tanks being moved.

I can't see grandma out there trying to hook up tanks in the snow. Or any ther time.

Never know what you might find when inspecting a home.

All the best. Clint McKie

Michael - Confucius was Chinese so he wouldn't know a haiku from a hayride.  But the second verse is the beginning of the juxtaposition!

It's brilliant really...  simply brilliant!

Clint - due to the sinking of the pad, the tanks are leaning at almost 15 degrees.  They are empty now, but when they are filled, due to the current leaning, they may be vulnerable to tipping and pulling the gas line off the house!

Good morning Jay. I enjoyed your Haiku attempt. The owners of this house may want to address this before adding gas for this years winter. I would be curious as to why they settled in the first place. Is it below an eave or just poor compacting prior to pouring the pad. Yikes.

You are a creative bugger, aren't you?  It would take me a month to create the darn Haiku!

Randy - the sellers are original owners, the house is four years old, and no other pad in the area was sinking this way.  So this one was clearly not founded well.

Thanks Wendy.  I wrote it on a pad on my knee as I was driving home.  I wrote two more too, being in the "mode!"

Good Afternoon Jay! I struggle with forming proper sentences and spelling, let alone trying figure out "Haiku." Have a great weekend!

Michael - I remember trying real hard to come up with one in high school English, but now they don't seem so hard.  We had to try to come up with limericks too, and I still can't do those!

Now you have grown those long feet. Or are you a tall guy. Any way don't tip over.

Jim - my feet are a size 13, which makes it hard for me to tip over!  Thost tanks now, that's a different thing.

Weird we were on the same wavelength again!  That's what, the third or fourth time?

Haiku. Interesting thing to start, and ambitious. If you stop would that be a haiku hiatus?

Pads like that are a bad practice here. Too susceptible to frost displacement.

Thanks Robert.  A new twist.  I have four written now, with photos.  We get really cold snaps too, but not like you.  I think frost does a number on lots of things.  Our decks need to be 24" deep to avoid frost influence - probably deeper for you.

Jay -- There is definitely a straight problem here!  It will be interesting to find out how the owners decide to fix that problem.

Steven - my understanding is that they are out of town.  When they see the photo in the report they will think that it's always been that way!  Whassa problem?
