Taking positive steps to “learn from experience.”We all know the old cliché that “experience is the best teacher.” Perhaps that doesn’t tell the whole story.

More appropriately it should be “bad experiences are the best teachers.” We tend too take missteps much more seriously and reserve special places in our gray matter to avoid satisfying Einstein’s definition of insanity.

But do we assign as much weight to our experiences when the results are positive? I often find myself wondering why I no longer do some things that were very productive in the past. Why did I stop? Who knows?

If we only change our behavior as the result of “hard knocks,” we are relegated to the status of being reactionary. How much better would it be to take affirmative steps that produce measurable results without being prodded by errors?

Nobody is perfect. But that shouldn’t stop us from trying!

Great food for thought.  I have recently been through some negative experiences and keep beating myself up to make sure I have learned from them.   Yes, there are many more positives than negatives, yet the postives are not taking up as much space in my head.    It is much more effective to take "affirmative steps that produce measurable results."  I like it.

Have a great week and thanks for the motivational boost on Monday!

As a former teacher I have always tried to convey this concept to my students.  Sometimes what appear to be failures are the best learning experiences.

Richard great post, yes it is amazing that things we did that gained us much success we sometimes stop doing and try something new.  After reading your post today I've decided to go back to the things I did which made me successful in my business and that is stay in touch with my data base on a monthly basis.  Thanks

The only true failure is the failure to try. Live and learn. Bad experiences are the best teachers and living through them gives us strength! Great post!

Richard,

Focus on the positive....  The world gives us enough negatives in one day, maybe in one hour to last a lifetime!

Bad experiences are many times the best teacher...when and if we survive!

I can't remember who said it or where I read it, but I absolutely believe that the attitude to have is "Sometimes we win...sometimes we learn." Thanks for the reminder that things that don't work out quite like we envisioned can still have a positive impact on our lives and our businesses.

I love the line that bad experience is the best teacher, similar to we learn from our mistakes I guess...

Oh, we like to be creative, get bored and want to try new things.  We often loose sight of what really is productive activity in our pursuit of trying to be different.  I have found that my business comes from just good old basics, working your referral base and my listings want me to sound in foundation of the business with a few standout marketing pieces.  Straying too far from tried and true basics will yield poor results!

It seems to me that most business seems to be reactive and not proactive. I keep putting my 2 cents in a gently non descriptive way... and so far no go.

Good morning Richard,

Excellent post and points to ponder...although growth necessitates trying new technologies and ideas, success is using those that produce results.

So true... Richard!  Our not-so-great experiences end up being the impetus for change... I suppose we are creatures of habit  ;-)
