Jay's Tuesday Free Enterprise Quote - 25 October 11

By
Home Inspector with Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC 3380-000723

"Even as government dominates the headlines, private entrepreneurs are busy every day working to improve products and services that improve our lives.  They do it without taxing us or regulating us, or making us suffer through tedious elections or political debates.  They make their products and offer them to us in a way that pleases the consuming public the most.  We can choose whether we want them or not."

Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.

And when one of these entrepreneurs dies, and is extolled for his contributions, then, and only then, is he mentioned by anyone in government as having made a contribution!

Prior to that were all the interactions between the entrepreneur and gubment:

(and this likely applies to all the great entrepreneurs and their private interactions with politicians)

  • The gubment tells the entrepreneur how great he is for the country, but then goes about preventing and restricting that entrepreneur's ability to do what he wants.
  • The entrepreneur tells the gubment it is out of line and "unfriendly to business."

What did the entrepreneur mean when he used the word "business?"

He meant entrepreneurial ability to function freely.
He meant entrepreneurial ability to design, develop, produce and distribute.
He meant entrepreneurial ability to profit from those products and services, and employ those profits in ways that allows for hiring and growth and more design, development, production and distribution.
He meant entrepreneurial ability to maneuver in a climate without unions stifling and stultifying his business.

HE MEANT THE CREATION OF WEALTH, WHICH IS THE OBJECTIVE OF BUSINESS!

So, re-read the quote above.  You want jobs?  Where should gubment's focus lie?  How about letting the economy perform free-market economics?

Jay - To a larget extent, I agree.  I'm not for too much regulation but then again, inherently against none at all.  Like life, there is a happy medium.

I'm digging your Tuesday Series by the way.

Great post.  There is a role for government in business, but it is not to pick winners and loosers.  It is to protect property rights (including intellectual ones) and see that contracts are honored.

Nutsy - I hope you are out of the hoosgow now!  You hoped for change and got it?

Jason - of course there has to be some regulations.  I like it when people do the speed limit!  But when they are crushing the business cycle or causing citizens severe hardship, they are wrong.  Glad you like the series!  I have 80 of them out now.

That's certainly a part of it Gene.  But as a Nannie gubment sucks.  Necessarily.

Bummer, he just died October 13 - the year 2000!  Seemed like a very nice fellow.  Great mug shot!

And I'm a dog guy.  They like cats for breakfast, sauteed, butter AND garlic.  A little back-yard rabbit mixed in completes the meal.  Two different food groups.

The WSJ did a story on which country was the best for starting a new business and #1 was Denmark, followed by Canada and then the US.  Does Denmark and Canada have lower "effective" corporate taxes and less regulations than America, I don't think so.  Do they have a better trained and educated workforce...probably.  And who provided that better trained and educated workforce?  I would venture a guess that it was government funded schools and colleges...oh and I don't think they have to worry about dealing with, what Republicans would call, "overburdensome" healthcare regulations and costs for obvious reasons.

Funny Karl!  Too funny!  High taxes and burdensome regs (not to mention really active unions) are the way to go all over the world to create more productivity and profit!  I would wager you don't know the first thing about regs and taxes in Canada and Denmark.  Are you comparing apples with apples?  No matter, two legs good, four legs bad.

And where do the best students from all over the world go to get edjumakated?

I bet Ford built that ultra-modern, extremely profitable production plant in Brazil because of high taxes, burdensome regulation and kick-ass unions!  Yeah, that's it.

Tell me, why couldn't they build that plant here?  And they COULD NOT!

Michael - raise your staff, stand in front of the Great Imam and say, "Let my people go!"  It worked for Moses...

True...I don't know much about Denmark's or Canada's regulations and/or taxes but since they are (as the right would describe them) 'socialist-leaning' countries I can only assume they would have all those commie-pinko-worker-protection-environmentally-sensitive type of regulations that seem to infuriate the right.

Well, Karl, stop dancing around the issue and get to it!  You make what appear to me to be specious points (not criticizing, just stating) that are not the issue.  Do you think when Steve Jobs was talking to the Grand Imam directly (click on the word "entrepreneur" above) that he was worried about Denmark's or Canada's policies?  Or whether their students were educated there or here?  He was complaining about burdens imposed by OUR gubment on OUR businesses (and people).

When I say free market I do NOT mean business.  It's the free market, or lack thereof, that promotes or stifles business.

And you know what happens when you assume, as you say above...     ;>)
