Is Virtual Texting Still Texting? Is It The Answer?

One of my most popular blogs ever was about texting,  A Very Sad Last Tweet.

Since I wrote this blog, texting has become even more prevalent.   cell phoneDistracted driving, of which texting is a major contributor, is a huge safety problem.

Car manufacturers have come up with a system to help minimized distracted driving from texting, according to the article in today's Washington Post, Automakers embrace hands-free text-messaging technology.

The question becomes, however, does this simply endorse a bad habit and make it easier to drive while distracted, or does it serve the public by making it less likely that drivers will text while driving?

Personally, I believe that there are drivers who will text regardless of the information that they have. They cannot resist the tempation to check that last vibration or the flashing red light.  For these people, this system will be invaluable. Wouldn't you rather be behind someone who is having their text messages read out loud to them than behind someone who is squinting to read that last text?

I am in no way endorsing texting behind the wheel. I am, however, aware that there are people who cannot help but believe that, 'it will never happen to me.'  By having a sytem like this in the car, the rest of us will be protected (to some degree) by their reckless actions.

Do you see this issue the same way? What do you think of this new system? Do you know anyone who has it?

Mike, You are smart to be defensive. You never know what other folks are like.

Wallace, those are good solutions. I think we all need to explore different ways to get information if we are going to compete in this virtual world.

Loreena, I just got my iPhone 4S, and have played a very little bit with Siri. Maybe it has a text to talk option (I will look into that) but it was my understanding it is more a way to get information. For example, I asked 'her' for local pizzarias. A list of them, and their phone numbers. appeared on my phone.

I find it funny when I see someone HOLDIING their cell and talking into it...wrong, that's still a ticket.

Holy, this invention is surely not to promote the 'sin' - I think NY was the first state to ban cell phone talks while driving - so hands free came in and nows, it's hands free texting. I am not a big proponent of texting while driving but newer smartphones does 'voice-text' anyways.

We have to get a law to stop all these distractions in the car. The cars get faster and the distractions become more and more.

Holly, making distracted driving hands free does not remove the distraction.

Just an update...I was having dinner last night with some friends who have been more adventurous with their Iphone 4S than I have been. It turns out that Loreena was right--you can talk to Siri and send virtual texts. I will have to try this out.  Apparently, you say something like, 'Text. Husband. Be home soon,' and it will text  that for you.

The question remains, is that distracted driving. I would have to say yes.

Holly-I even think talking on the phone handsfree is distaracting.  Yes I am among those who do it but I try to limit my road time phone time as much as I can.

All systems are created with the best intention but how it is use is a different story. I think we should ban texting while driving all together.

Holly....crazy that people do that....I never text while driving.   Pull over for a few minutes....really, every time I see a car out of control or slow or swerving, they are always texting....I'd rather deal with the drunk drivers.
