One of my most popular blogs ever was about texting, A Very Sad Last Tweet.
Holly,
This kind of stuff has made me a much more defensive driver.
Mike in Tucson
I don't TEXT and I have a bluetooth headset for my cel phone...I get my voicemail messages transcribed to view them on my smartyphone so that I am NOT distracted with my phone while driving
Hi Holly, I havent tried Siri on the iPhone 4s. But would you consider that virtual texting?
Mike, You are smart to be defensive. You never know what other folks are like.
Wallace, those are good solutions. I think we all need to explore different ways to get information if we are going to compete in this virtual world.
Loreena, I just got my iPhone 4S, and have played a very little bit with Siri. Maybe it has a text to talk option (I will look into that) but it was my understanding it is more a way to get information. For example, I asked 'her' for local pizzarias. A list of them, and their phone numbers. appeared on my phone.
I find it funny when I see someone HOLDIING their cell and talking into it...wrong, that's still a ticket.
Holy, this invention is surely not to promote the 'sin' - I think NY was the first state to ban cell phone talks while driving - so hands free came in and nows, it's hands free texting. I am not a big proponent of texting while driving but newer smartphones does 'voice-text' anyways.
We have to get a law to stop all these distractions in the car. The cars get faster and the distractions become more and more.
Holly, making distracted driving hands free does not remove the distraction.
Hey, Holly! I included this post in Last Week's Favorites. Have a great Sunday!
Just an update...I was having dinner last night with some friends who have been more adventurous with their Iphone 4S than I have been. It turns out that Loreena was right--you can talk to Siri and send virtual texts. I will have to try this out. Apparently, you say something like, 'Text. Husband. Be home soon,' and it will text that for you.
The question remains, is that distracted driving. I would have to say yes.
My Droid has the talk ability to text (Not sure of the techie terminology). It's great if the darn thing can understand me!
Holly-I even think talking on the phone handsfree is distaracting. Yes I am among those who do it but I try to limit my road time phone time as much as I can.
Holly....crazy that people do that....I never text while driving. Pull over for a few minutes....really, every time I see a car out of control or slow or swerving, they are always texting....I'd rather deal with the drunk drivers.
thank you very much for the informative and interesting post. I get so much out of the active rain network.
