THE SILVER LINING CHRONICLES - SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL FALLS PREVENTION MONTH
I learned that September is National Falls Prevention Month, but fall prevention is really essential at any time of year.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 1 out of 3 Americans aged 65 or over will experience a fall that will lead to injuries such as broken bones or situations even more dire like brain trauma.
Last month, Long Island health organizations were busy putting together programs for education and outreach to the community. Generally speaking, adult falls can be attributed to 1 of 3 scenarios:
- medication
- the need to improve balance and increase upper and lower body strength
- home environment modification
Certain medications like the ones prescribed for high blood pressure will sometimes cause dizziness to their patient. If the patient is aware of this possible side effect, he can adjust the manner in which he rises thus avoiding a potentially negative outcome.
All sorts of exercises, including dancing and swimming, are good for improving balance and strength. Some like Tai Chi and Yoga can even be done at home.
Additionally, a few simple tricks like removing tripping hazards i.e., area rugs and improperly placed electrical cords, may fall-proof your home and keep the seniors in your life safe.

Jill,
Fortunately or unfortunately we all will be there, and it will be pretty soon for me. It is difficult to imagine, but I know that you are right.
Jill, Looks like a little mud jacking is in order with that sidewalk. I would surely trip over this one. I'm such a clutz.
Jon, if it's true for you, then it's also true for me. I'm not that far behind you. It's just a little more to be aware of in the "Art" of aging gracefully.
Belinda - I walk over that everyday when I walk my dog. It's the homeowner's responsibility to fix it and it stands to reason that a warning or fine from the town would be in order, but nothing yet...
Jill, I like that you added the tai chi and yoga to your next post so that people have some low-impact ways to stay fit and healthy.
Thanks, Ron. I added them because they've been proven to work.
