President Reagan and Tip O'Neil were 180 degrees apart when it can to politics.  They disagreed vehemently over how this country should be run.  They fought to out maneuver and out politic the other's party.  They were two very intelligent and aggressive men.  They both wanted to win.  Yet at the end of the day they would have a beer together and enjoy each other's company.  Nothing like that is happening today in this political atmosphere.  Their tenures produced some of the most productive years in our history.

Nobody can take a joke.  Everything is polarized and very personal.  I have some ultra liberal friends.  We have the most contentious political debates.  It never gets personal.  We disagree without being disagreeable.  We are very spirited but never make it personal.

Everything in today's politics is black and white.  My way or the highway.  Everything in life is gray except for death and taxes.  We must stop taking everything so personal.  The objective of politics should be for the good of our nation not some politicians personal agenda.

We need term limits.

That seems to be the biggest obstacle at the moment in American politics. It's a very sad thing to see from north of the border, but it seems that both sides are more intent on making the other side look bad than they are at making conciliatory gestures to move things forward. It's too bad really.

Conrad, I agree completely with this post, term limits across the board is one huge solution to our problems as a nation.  I do not like the animosity in today's politcal scene!

Conrad I agree but think the way the laws are written now if lets say a Senator has a limit of two terms at the end of his (her) second term they received a package to rival the best CEO in the Country.  That would involve Congress to change the law as it is written now and you know that won't happen

Good morning Conrad,

Term limits AND those voted into office are not allowed to vote for their own salary and pension packages.  They should be in step with the same packages they vote for the American Public...Social Security, Medicare and Insurance...no lifelong pensions.

So true, Conrad.   This applies not only to politics, but any environment where two may disagree about a decision.  We've become so venomous about people who disagree with us; we attribute everything evil to the opposing side.

How true Malcom. Term limits are the key Darcy & Tony. It can happen James but we must elect people who will pass the new law. I agree Lisa. Black and white Steve. Not good.
