QR Codes are NOT for the Internet!

QR Code
This Links to Nothing!

QR codes are all the rage in the real estate world right now.  Apparently, real estate professionals love them.  If you're on the QR bandwagon, I have one request for you.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE learn how to use them!

Don't know what I mean.  Take a look around ActiveRain at the various blog posts sporting those fancy little designs.  Look great don't they?  The problem?  Well, with few exceptions...

THEY SHOULDN'T BE THERE!

QR Codes aren't meant to be put on websites pointing to other websites.  Think it through for a minute.  What's the point of putting a QR code to your website in an AR post?  Do you think that a reader sitting in front of a computer will decide to flip out their phone, open up the QR app and try to snap a photo of your spiffy QR code so that they can read it on their phone?  Or, do you think that they'd simply prefer a link that they could click (remember they're already in front of a computer)?

QR Codes are meant to be used on your printed materials so that people who have them can get to your online info.

But it's more than that.  QR codes are meant for mobile devices.  If you're using them, make sure that you're sending people to mobile-friendly web pages.  You might want to make sure that you NEED a QR code for the web page your trying to get people to view.  For example:  my website is HickoryNCHomes.com.  On almost all mobile devices, I can type that in far faster than I can open up a QR reader, scan the code and wait on the phone to read it and get to the website.

Make sure you are sending them to the RIGHT web page.  Remember, we're going after the mobile user.  If you're QR code is on a flyer about a house, make sure you are sending them to the web page about that house, not to your homepage or search page.

Likewise, if you're advertising search for homes, send them to your IDX search page.

QR codes are great when used properly.  If you're going to be using them, use them where they are needed.

Hi Roger:  I agree with Scott #80, that makes no sense whatsoever and I have no idea why anyone would do that!  As for having them on your site--if you're a mobile user, it's a great way to capture a mobile site as you had out for a tour and is far quicker than typing in a url.  If they're there and people don't know what they're for, most don't think anything about it; others will 'check it out' and probably click on the bar code.  If that takes them to your search page, no harm, no foul. It's best to have the url embedded in the code for online use in those instances.  But, for those tech-savvy consumers, they love it!  It makes life simpler for them to scan and run.  I've had people tell me that they do that just before heading out of the office with a specific listing that they want to drive by on the way home.  It's the wave of the future so, I've embraced it and still have more to do with it than I've done already.  We'll see where this takes us!

I agree 100%, Scott (#80).  It's all about the effective use of them.

Unfortunately, Eric, I don't believe the improper use of them is portraying them as "tech-savvy"

BINGO, Debe!  Again, it's all about the proper use of them.

Thanks, Eliazar

Roger, great subject! #21 suggests the the use of QR codes on your electronic media shows that you are a "savey" agent. This is the farthest from the truth! If you don't know the difference between a link and a QR code, you just proved to me that you are NOT internet savey at all.

I print mine on all of my outgoing envelopes! Yes, I still use snail mail for monthly correspondence to my clients. Why? Because nobody else does it, because lots of people still like to get "real" mail, because it put my "real" business card in their hands and because it's real easy to change email addresses to avoid junk mail (some people do this annually just to fend off the junk.)

Please do not think I am the one who is not internet savey. I have owned a computer since 1978, I was one of the very first to use a tablet (PC) in my business and did away with paper, all contracts were signed on my tablet (2006) and I have been using QR codes for almost 2 years!

A point I've made in a few of the comments here, Don.  Thanks.  I love the use of them on outgoing envelopes.  That's an awesome idea!

Home is where the hearth is.

you're preachin' to the choir, Roger.  You're preachin' to the choir.  I've been saying that for months... but everyone's so gung-ho to jump onto some new exciting technology, that they don't seem to understand it's use.

(and thanks for the information about the Northern Bald Ibis... a migratory bird found in barren, semi-desert or rocky habitats..)

Roger,

I'm a late-comer to QR codes (just used my first one on a new listing) and I realized the same things you're saying.  So thanks for confirming my thoughts.  They're for printed marketing pieices.

I have used them on signs, flyers and sign riders.  I had never thought about putting them on my business card-LOVE IT!!  I will certainly be adding it to my new cards when I order them. Maybe 2 codes?  One "learn about me" one "search for NC homes?"

It looks good, so we should do it, right Alan? :)

Used correctly, Lloyd, they can be effective online.  It's just that most aren't using them effectively.  Debe Maxwell has some good examples on how to use them on your website effectively.  The key is gearing them toward the mobile consumer.

Sounds like a plan, Krista!

Hi Roger, I came over after reading Debe Maxwell's blog earlier. You have some valid points why we should not be using QR code our AR websites. As you stated, it was intended for printed materials. I have used QR codes on my fliers, and sign riders, and even mail outs. I did remove my QR code on my AR signature awhile back.

Hi Roger,

You landed on a nerve!

We all try so hard to be cool.

To keep up.

To have the latest and greatest.

Pretty funny when we don't get the obvious!

Hey Jerry!  I think a lot of people jumped at using them before they really thought about how people would use them.

Phil, I learned awhile back to stick with the basics of what works and wait a bit for others to work the kinks out of all of the "cool" stuff :)

I have never yet heard or read a cogent or compelling well-reasoned argument against putting a QR Code on a blog, site, or screen that consumers will see.  I believe in empowerment through choice.

Civilization is NOT threatened when consumers are offered choices as to how to gather information.

If we accept that it is always easier to keyboard in links than to scan them, then that should be equally true of print or screen,

So,as some have said, QR Codes have no function or place in marketing.  That may yet be true, but I see big time ads with QR Codes in greater numbers daily.

Not exactly sure how to respond to that one, Mike.  By that reasoning, a screen door on a submarine wouldn't be a big deal, either, I suppose.

It's not about choice or threat of extinction or whatever.  It's about functionality.

Online (on a website): if I am already online looking at your website, ALL QR codes are worthless, even if I'm on a mobile device.  If I want to go to another website, I'll simply use my mouse or finger to click a link (hopefully) that will send me to another page.  What's the point of the QR code then?

And no, it's NOT always easier to type in a link on a mobile device.  BUT if it's a short URL, then it usually is:  Mine is HickoryNCHomes.com And in most cases, it IS easier to type in than to pull out your phone, open up your QR scanner, take the pic and wait on the data to load.

I'm no QR code expert...I do use them on my print marketing to make it interactive. I always thought using them on the Internet was kind of pointless, so it is good to have some of my thoughts about it validated.

Great post Roger. I think the recent influx of social media, mobile media, seo, etc... has many agents feeling lost an confused. Your post is short, to the point and very easy to understand. No doubt this will help those agents who's heads are swimming with all this new tech!
