Why is it important to be in Sync with Culture in Business?

Roxanne Watson FordRoxanne Watson-Ford, Business Development extraordanaire with Alamo Title, came to our office to offer some great information on statistics on the demographic shift happening in our country and locally here in Travis County.  It is important to identify diversity so we are able to provide value service to our customers and our communities.

In the U.S. according to the U.S. Census Bureau in looking at the population change from 2001 to 2010, the Hispanic or Latino (of any race) has increased by 43%.  The Asian and Pacific Islander population has increased by 40.5%.

In the State of Texas the Hispanic or Latino (of any race) has increased by 41.8% and the Asian and Pacific Islander population has increased by 67.5%.

To break it down in Austin in Travis County, the Hispanic or Latino (of any race) the population has increased 49.6%. The Asian andRoxanne Pacific Islander population has increased by 60%. In Williamson County the Hispanic or Latino (of any race) has increased by 128.1% and the Asian and Pacific Islander population has increased by 204.9%.

Armed with these statistics we need to learn about these cultures so we can best understand their set of learned behaviors, beliefs, attitudes, values and ideals so we can work effectively with them.  As Alamo Title, I too am committed to recognizing and embracing the influence of culture on every individual.

Alamo Title has a philosophy that we all need to embrace:

Dorie, Some of our areas have gotten very diverse, one of the perks of living near big cities with a wide range of job opportunities.  One of our more recent seller's joked about their cul de sac being the United Nation.  They were originally from India, and also on the street was Ukrainian, Chinese and Ghanan.....and I think one other, but memory escapes me.  If there's any doubt, running a neighborhood mailing list demonstrates the full diversity of name sources.

I would suggest that it would be more helpful if the immigrant citizens learn the history and culture of the country to which they moved, the U.S.

With so much emphasis on the demographics, culture and mores of the new citizen communities, the U.S. has become quite Balkanized.

The melting pot, where all citizens new and old worked together, produced a viable and successful community for all.

Good morning Debbie,

It is important to understand how others think and why they think that way. It helps us all to understand choices that are made....just like the color red for some means good luck..for some white means death..might help to know these things and could help facilitate the process.

Good morning Barabra,

I agree! Understanding when someone invites you to tea it is an honor and should not be decline that it could mean to them an insult. Understanding the number 4 means bad luck so the client might not like the house because of the address. It's about learning the most we can to offer quality service.

Good morning Kathy,

You are right. We are in the service sector and like a good restaurant who takes the time to learn about the likes of their patrons and cater to them it is remembered and that is on of the reasons we would go back to feel the "experience" again.

Good morning Rob,

If you don't take the extra effort to learn as much as you can you will be loosing business.

Good morning BLIZ,

Now with the population shifting to increased diversity in our country it is such a wonderful opportunity to learn about other cultures. It's a learning curve for them and we can help them blend their ways with ours. First we have to understand what we are blending :).

Good morning Lenn,

I agree immigrant citizens should learn about our country's history and customs. It is an opportunity for those of us in the service sector to help blend our cultures. We can take the step of learning about theirs so we know how to work with them and help teach them ours. Their learned beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, values and ideals might be closer to ours than we like to admit. I believe our job is to provide superior service and that includes learning as much about our clients so we can effectively work with and for them. I've learned many things about different cultures and it has helped me in negotiating, marketing properties and has added a new volume of business to my overall business plan.

Love our great allied sources in our business.  Wonderful information.  I really like how the title companies keep us up on good information.  Very nice post to pay tribute to a great go to source.

This is so important to not only understand the make-up of our communities but how to better communicate and market to different cultures.

Dorie: This is definitely a Thought Provoker. If someone was into hunting elephants and you sold them a home where hunting was not permitted that would not be a good fit. But, if you sold someone a home that liked sailing and there was a lake within 5 miles that would be EXCELLENT. My comment is based on my personal needs if I were looking to purchase.

C&C - tapped the S for this one.
