announces November programs
The City of Farmington Hills offers dozens of programs for area adults age 50 and better at the Center for Active Adults, located in the Costick Center on 11 Mile Road between Middlebelt and Inkster. The Center is open Monday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Lunch is served daily, $2.75 for ages 60 and better, $5 for under 60. Here are just a few of the programs available in November.
Homeowner Tips. Tuesday, Nov. 1, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Learn maintenance tips and prepare yourself for home emergencies including water in the basement, frozen pipes, gas leaks, and more. Register by Oct. 31.
Book Discussion. Thursday, Nov. 3, 1 p.m. Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith. Join a lively, informal book discussion on the first Thursday of each month. Paperback copies are available in advance for checkout.
First Friday Ballroom. Friday, Nov. 4, 3 – 6 p.m. Enjoy ballroom dancing featuring the Mike Wolverton Band with buffet dinner included. All levels of experience and adult ages, singles and couples welcome. $9 by Oct. 31 deadline, $10 after, $1 discount to members.
Driver Safety Program. Wednesday, Nov. 9 and Thursday, Nov. 10, 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Participate in an AARP-sponsored driver refresher course that may reduce the cost of your auto insurance. Attendance at both days required. Fee is $15. Register by Nov. 8.
Stars and Stripes Forever. Friday, Nov. 11, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Salute veterans at our annual commemoration of those who served their country. Join us for a ceremony and speeches, luncheon, and dancing to a live band. Fee is $8 by Nov. 7, $10 after.
Lunch and the DIA. Monday, November 14, 12 – 2 p.m. Enjoy a slide presentation about one of the DIA’s impressive collections. Fee is $6.
How to Talk to Your Doctor. Tuesday, November 15, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Learn how to prepare for your doctor’s visit, ask key questions, and create a plan to get good health care.
Turkey, Pumpkins & Bingo, Oh My! Thursday, Nov. 17, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Connect with friends while playing Bingo with an array of prizes followed by a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Fee is $8 by Nov. 11 deadline; $10 after.
Friday’s Film. Friday, Nov. 18, 12 – 3 p.m. Enjoy a delicious lunch, popcorn, candy and a beverage, and enjoy watching the movie Lincoln Lawyer. Fee is $5 in advance, $7 at the door.
Several support groups are also available at the Center for Active Adults including Caregivers, Grief and Loss, First Step Stroke, and Vision Impaired. The Center also offers many clubs that meet regularly including Coupon Clippers, Photography Club, and the Red Hat Society. Call 248-473-1830 for meeting dates and times.
