Wednesday With Some Words...Days Gone By....

Here in our area this style of home was not too uncommon.  I am not going to say that it was a popular style of home, but it seemed like there were a couple of these in almost every town in Utah, especially in Southern Utah.  Many have since had a Main Floor and upper levels added to the basement to bring them into the more main stream style of home.  This particular home didn't quite make it to that point. It has been like this for the nearly 12 years that we have lived here, and as I remember, even before that.

These homes were very energy efficient houses, once you got them warm in the Winter, they would stay warm.  They also stayed cooler in the Summer, but you lived in a basement!

Tony:

I have never seen a home like the one pictures.  I can see that a basement home would be cooler in the summer.  Thanks for sharing a picture of this unique home.

Interesting! It looks like UTAH has been included in our 2012 travel plans. Maybe I'll see one! LOL!

Tony - I have never seen one like that house before.  Not in Long Island or Johns Island!  I don't even have a basement now.

Tony, that's a first for me.  What's the style name?  I can see how it would be energy efficient.  Very interesting.

Wish you had photos of the inside.  I don't think I could handle not having windows.  Definitely unique.

Tony and Darcy, ok, at first I thought I was looking at a weird A-frame but on closer inspection and reading your post, I realized I am looking at a roof of a house that is built underground! Now that is truly stra-a-nge! But if they put those 'windows' like they have in Hollister's (or is it American Eagle?) that show live outside video, then it might be bearable...

Real interesting home...how much does the market time increase on a home like that? and where's the door to get in...at the side through the roof or you got to step down into it?

Tony and Darcy - there are advantages to living "underground" but it is unusual for one to remain that way if it was not built to be an underground home.

That is a strange one alright! I have never seen anything like it! And I thought a geodesic dome was weird! That looks like just a roof on the ground! I sure wish you could see inside that thing! So is there a name for this kind of home style?? Is it actually called a basement home?

Oh thank God my dad never got to build one of these! Ick. He always talked about it and I would think, no way would I ever want to live in a house like that. He was very thrilled about the energy savings.

I like SUNSHINE and windows!!! Interesting picture though!

Hi Tony,

Fascinating!

Looks like there was a mudslide and everything got covered except the roof!

Valerie, That is true, one of the main reasons that I wouldn't want to live in a basement houses.

Rosalinda, We found that our basement was more of a storage area than living space!  These houses are sort of uncommon now in most places, even here.

Mike, We just called them basement houses, not sure if that is an official style name.  I don't know of any city or town that would give you a certificate of occupancy if you tried to build one today.

Joy, That would be interesting!  Darcy's Parents just returned from Washington DC and Pennsylvania, now I have the travel buy myself!

Kay, It is abandoned and the roof has mostly caved in, I didn't like the way the photo's showing that looked, so I deleted them.  I should go back and shoot some more photos of this house.

Joni, Travel is a great blogging subject!

Steve, I don't know if this style house has a name, we have always just called them basement houses.

Bob, Thank you! It is always an honor to be featured in a group!

Sharon, I would still have to have the natural light, I like windows!

These are really uncommon anymore, this particular one hasn't had anyone live in it in years.  I would imagine that they would lag on the market for a long time unless someone came in with the money to add above ground house to the basement house.

Kathy, Very true, most of the ones that we used to have around here have either had above ground additions, or have been torn out and had another home built on the lot.  These are really getting rare anymore, at least around here.  This one has been abandoned for many years, I am surprised that it hasn't been torn out or just caved in.

Sandy, We do have a nice variety of home styles here!

Rosalie, I have never heard them called anything but basement homes, I don't know if you could even build anything like this anymore.  Getting a certificate of occupancy would really be tough I would think.

Dawn, That is the one huge advantage, but for me, it isn't enough to make me want to live in one of these!

Phil, It does look like that!
