Heritage Village Makeover Now Complete

Back in November of 2010, I wrote a post about the transformation and makeover of Heritage Village that was underway. Almost a full year later, I thought it would be would nice to show you what that makeover looks like with a few of the before and after Photos.

Heritage Park's nineteenth century Victorian Homes were transformed from a Park to an enclave of hotel guest rooms as part of a multi-million dollar restoration.

Heritage Park was created  to preserve a number of century old structures  that were threatened by demolition when the post WWII expansion of downtown San Diego started.

With the help of matching federal funds, San Diego county purchased the current 7.8 parcel of land adjacent to Old Town in 1971. Seven buildings were moved  from various parts of downtown and the Banker's Hill area of Hillcrest from 1971 through 1982.

Everything has a season  and Heritage Park provides a new attraction for guests and visitors to San Diego.  Thankfully the visionaries of yesterday  saved these historic structures  and now will see these marvelous old homes be able to create new memories. May they live on for yet another century.

All in all I love the new color palette and I think the City of San Diego did a wonderful job with this transformation.

Hi Jon,

While the buildings are not as detailed as some II have seen, the color palette certainly is more colorful and appealing. There are some fabulous historic Victorian in San Diego and I will do a post one days and show off a few of them. One in particular is just awesome.

Hi Norma, They do indeed and thank you so much for your nice comment. As far as I can tell, they have not started the nightly rentals as yet, at least I don't think so. The windows are still covered with what paper on the inside on all but one.

William those are some great improvements, many times we tell our clients that a bit of paint will do wonders and some can not believe it. Here it is living proof. Now when I see actions like this I feel good about where my Tax Dollars are going.

These are so cool, and it is wonderful that the City took this on to preserve them. I've not been through this area but will certainly take the time. It's a great bit of history I suspect many do not know about.

And of course your photos make the most of these beauties!

William - they did an excellent job with the restorations.  I love those old "Painted Ladies".  We take backroads  a lot when motorcycle riding and those back roads normally lead you through the original parts of towns.  Some of the cities in the south - in areas like Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia have some beautifully restored old homes.

William - The collection of homes are really gorgeous in their storybook colors.  I wonder however, how authentic they really are?  For example, I grew up in a Queen Anne Victorian built in 1905 here in Sacramento.  My parents were its second owners, and the original owners lived in the house next door in the years I grew up.  In recent years the city has put both of these houses on the Historic Preservation list.  My family's house was always painted white, with dark green trim, from the time it was built.  But the owner that has it now has painted it a barn red.  I always cringe when I drive by and look at it.  Because I know it isn't historically correct.

Hey William: I love looking at photos of homes, especially authentic Victorians and Queen Annes. The colors really pop. I'm thinking you tweaked the colors a little bit like you did with that hummingbird, right? I tried the Apple software you suggested, but I could not figure out how to make it work. I have Photoshop Elements, so I'm wondering if I really need to buy the Apple Apeture? What do you think? Of course, Photoshop is not intuitive to me, either.

I like these homes because they are unique. Too many times, homes look a lot a like. These are beautiful homes that are well designed.
