A Good Idea?

Main electric service wires on gutter down spoutIn the course of many a home inspection I find something that makes me scratch my head in wonder. Now when I find a Handy Homeowner fix or a weird install by a contractor, it’s not hard to understand that somehow the synapses in this person’s brain matter connected in such a way as to view their work as sensible and good. What really makes my head throb is when there are very likely multiple people involved in weirdness.

Take for example a recent rainy morning inspection. As I came around to the one side of the exterior, right where the main electric service is attached to the house, I saw this little bit of strangeness. The main service wires from the street had been run through the gutter down spout. Not only run through, but upon closer examination from they roof, they were resting on the leader.

Main electric service wires resting on down spoutThere is no doubt more than one person was involved in the installation or saw the wires during construction of this five year old house. To add to the concern are the clamps. They are covered with electrical tape and not well at that. The tape will assuredly wear exposing the wire. If it contacts the gutter, which is aluminum and an excellent conductor, and a person were to then contact the gutter or down spout, zzzzzzt!

That could really ruin someone’s day.

So how was this viewed as okay by all involved?

James, it is so hard to believe this and being a 5 yr old house obvious that the contractor did it. Good thing the buyers hired you to inspect.

Jim, That is helping to keep the wire fatigue down. Look no tension on the mast.

Really, that one is playing with fire. Yikes

Sure!  Number one, we have an additional lightening rod.  Number two, we had additional support.

Additional support is always welcome.  For example, if you aren't athletic, at least be an athletic supporter.

See?

Michael, Yep, job security.

David, No question this was done by the contractor.

Don, Yes, isn't extra support a good thing ;)

Jay, Yes, I do see, but do I want to see? NO!

What gets me is people forget that the bonding/ground wire is a bare conductor. This is great to have when there is a major fault or problem in the house or on the line as all that 'wild' out of control power has to go somewhere. That bare ground wire is there to provide the path to ground rather than through your heart muscle.

So that ground is already bare and directly in contact with the aluminium downspout. We don't have to wait for the other wires to fray, just the next accidental short or lightening strike.

Ever read the stats on that frequency?

Now thats an eye opener!

Robert, A great point, one that hadn't occurred to me. This is a bad install for one more reason.
