Maggie: Lending Tree? The majority? it is a flawed survey and was the from the start because of Move Inc. being on it. They came they saw, they went away and created another platform. I think the point of it when I created it was that Move Inc. was the worst.... and it had not happened, but that someone will buy ActiveRain because it's for sale.
The Lending Tree votes kind of surprise me. I am not sure why I even put them on.just realized I did not put Trulia on the list! I wonder why...
This was not a real part of the twists and turns of the real estate saga was it? Just a holiday funny on Sellsius? Or do you think there is a "rest of the story?"
David G wrote: "I've clearly got some blogging to do." To keep up with Spencer? To keep up with Sara? To get under Joe F's skin? To spread the Zillow word?
Mike: How do you think AR would be different if Zillow bought it? I think ActiveRain keeps being different, it keeps changing. It will change no matter who eventually buys it IMHO. Thanks for saying "nice use of a widget..." someone noticing your using a widget well is always gratifying ; -)
Frank mentioned having an exit strategy based on who might buy AR. After the Move notification, other Rainers noted similar backup exit plans (backing up posts to the hard drive so they could delete those here or beefing up their personal blogs).
AR is merely a techie platform. The value comes solely from the bloggers who see/experience value by using this platform. If the platform ceases to represent value, then bloggers may move onto a "new & improved" platform. The platform is for sale ... the bloggers aren't. We're free to do whatever works best for us whether it's with a new AR owner or our own blogs or a different platform. For that reason, I would think a new owner would have to tread cautiously.
Obviously, some of the companies listed in your poll are not viewed as being positive to the real estate industry. There might be a mass exodus simply on "principle" if they were to purchase the platform.
Then Zillow is doing relatively well... in comparison to Move Inc and Lending Tree
OK - not being a Realtor, I guess I am in the dark on this, but I am sensing that there is some kind of a negative tone from some towards Zillow and (by extension) those who post here who are also associated with Zillow.
Why?
Joseph: Zillow has a long and storied history... for a company that is less than 2 years old.
Lots to read about Zillow on the internet.. search ActiveRain... use the Google blog search for Zillow posts outside AR. Some agents love Zillow some don't. Some agents love Move Inc. maybe some don't just like any vendor.
I have followed Zillow, and am just perplexed by the strong negative tones I read into some posts.
Gee that's to bad. I can't help you with your perplexion. You'll just have to keep following or thinking about it. The answer you seek is not here in this humble little post. This is just a recap of a Halloween blog married to a recycled PollDaddy widget.
Or of course maybe someone here wants to help Joseph...who has read and followed but just doesn't understand.
Thanks for stopping by.
Sara from Zillow here... Me too Joseph!! :) Ha-Ha.
My guess is that dot coms have come and gone throughout the last 10-15 years and some companies did not always act ethically, so there is some justifiable scepticism out there.
When I meet with Brokers/Agents and ask why they are negative about Zillow, 9 times out of 10 it is because they have some misinformation. The other 9% have negative feelings based on something 'they think' we are going to do. The other 1% I don't think we will ever please (and sometimes they are the loudest).
So it is up to us to make sure we are constantly getting correct and up to date information out there to you folks. So far, AR has been a great way to do this.
Thanks, Sara. All I have seen so far is some negative perceptions, but nothing concrete (and, of course, the snide side remarks to an honest question which offered no explanations, either).
Having bookmarked Zillow from near the beginning and following it's expansion and features, I have found it to be an interesting and entertaining site. I don't expect superhuman results with regard to the estimates, and can understand where they may cause confusion or misunderstandings, but until better information becomes publicly available and growth to include human editing of the estmates (which would probably cost a ton!) I understand that they will be imperfect.
My perception (and this could be wrong) seems to be that Realtors dispropriationately dislike Zillow, but again - I fail to see why. The general attitude I percieve (again, no real facts to tell me exactly why) is that Zillow somehow threatens their livelihood, which - if true - would be understandable. I know hundreds of Realtors, and the key to their success is relationships, marketing, and local knowledge - and that is something that no online service or presence can replace.
Sorry to have interrupted this fascinating post with my question.
I love the Active Rain community for their sense of humor and tolerance. The Halloween post was our brand of humor, for better or worse. I apologize if it was perceived as a personal attack on Spencer Rascoff-- I hope he did not see it that way. If he did, he should see these:

But to be serious for a moment, our long standing problem with Zillow has to do with their stepping on homeowner rights &, by extension, listing agents' rights. These exclusive rights include the RIGHT to decide:
It is our opinion that Zillow violates these rights in order to benefit buyers or other sellers, although we would strongly argue that a grossly inaccurate zestimate benefits no one.
If the homeowner, or their LA, has no problem with Zillow, neither do we. But if they have a problem, then so do we. And they do: http://blog.sellsiusrealestate.com/zillow/owners-in-zillowland-we-want-out-zestimates-removed/2007/10/23/
Sorry to spoil all the fun, Maureen.
PS. I really do love Sara and would never put her in a hound's suit. (And I still like all the Z-men-- David & Drew . I have yet to meet Spencer. Maybe he can get even with me by whooping me in a game of chess :)
Thanks Sara and Joe F for helping Joseph M. I just have NO patience for the "I am clueless, fill me in" type comments.
Very interesting discussion back on the Sellsius Blog about Spencer's blogging debut on ActiveRain and the significance of the warm welcome... Sellsius is not getting bogged down in hashing out Zillow history and public relations. Sometimes I think you can really see AR better from a distance.
I'm just a big fan of Spencer Rascoff, what can I say..........I always wish I had gotten accepted to Harvard :)
No truth to the Zillow to buy AR talk............
We featured him and gave him a warm welcome because we think he has a unique perspective from his position at Zillow and we wanted our members to know they have direct access to the CFO and VP of marketing for a company that a lot of people are talking about. Now if they have a question, they can go right to him :)
(not to mention he has a pretty colorful background with web companies)
BlogRush finally has a dashboard that says something. I think I will just blog about Spencer Rascoff on ActiveRain. Or just put Zillow in the title of all entries? Whether or not it has to do with Zillow.... because there is a buzz about Zillow. I had never heard of Spencer until Bob's featured blog... Barton, Drew, David G. Sara Bonert I know as Zillow... Which to a certain extent may answer the "I a clueless fill me in " comment about real estate agents and Zillow... a good rant with a recognizable brand can be so satisying... whether or not it is anything that consumers understand or care about??? Or do you just get traffic from others in the RE industry?
