Wouldn't It Be Nice

I had the day off and I was running around doing some errands and one of the errands brought me to Old Navy.  While I was on the line waiting to check out I started to pay attention to three little girls.  They clearly were not from the same family.  One little girl was impeccably dressed and the other two not so much.

Two of the girls were sisters and they were wearing clothes that were a little worn and didn't match.  The point of this is that all three were having fun and playing with each other.  No distinction, no difference.  No notice of who had what on.  They were just three little people playing together.  The Mom's were right behind me and one of them looked worn out but they both appeared to be the same age.

All three girls were strutting, all three heads up, smiles on and open to the adventure of exploring around Old Navy.  Wouldn't it be nice if they could stay that way?  Wouldn't it be nice if clothes never made a difference to friends.  I wish all little girls could become big girls and not be worn out and would always strut with heads up and smiles on?  Just a wish, just hoping.

Great food for thought, Liz! There is a lot of encouragment in our world to focus on material goods. Maybe if more emphasis was placed on our "internal outfit" (self esteem, empathy, etc, etc), more girls (& guys!) would strut around with their heads held high... even in worn out clothing.

Liz there are a lot of kids like that out there. They tend to be in the background while the spoiled ones are the squeaky wheels we hear about. It is refreshing to see in some of today’s kids after those of us from the 60’s worked so hard to down play materialism.

Liz - I was thinking the same thing the other day watching some girls walk into an elementary.  Unfortunately, those are the very ones who get shot down by the jealousy and selfishness of others all too often.  So....did you get your fleece at Old Navy?  We've just had a couple of mornings here that were worthy!  Love this cool weather!!

Good observaton, Liz. Unfortunately many people judge others by the clothes they wear, cars they drive, etc. I htink it is really interesting when experiments are done where people wear a "fat suit" and see how people react to them. If we all would just remember, we are all little kids at heart dealing with our own struggles.

Great post Liz, I love the fact that kids do not see economic differences, or color or anything like that, they just see each other as other people....awesome

It would be wonderful.  I remember the day I realized my clothes weren't 'right'.  My 6th-grade teacher decided a fashion show would be a good idea. I don't know what this event was supposed to teach us, but she said to sign up for a category and wear something we already owned. Well, I think I was the only girl who didn't get a new outfit, and I only had about 4 outfits. So several girls made a point of letting me know my clothes didn't quite 'cut' it.

So - who is to blame?  The thoughtless kids, or the adult who set up the scenario? I think it's us adults to take the innocence out of kids.

Liz,

I do wish we could get them raised without the superficial shallow priorities that we sometimes wind up with.  We do not have any schools here that require uniforms but soemtimes I think that would be an excellent idea...

Hi Liz,

As the mother of a now 16 year old daughter, I do think that there is a shift to not judge so much by someone's clothes.  I still see my daughter and her friends have a great time together even though they all seem to dress very differently.  They are very accepting and caring of each other.  But maybe I only see that small pocket; I do think my daughter has exceptionally nice friends.  I love them like they were my own kids.
