I always believe in 'doing the right thing'.  It amazes me how others don't.

How can someone blatantly steal content from the website of someone else?  Is it really that difficult to just create your own content?

I was reviewing the log files from a client just the other day and noticed a referral from a competitor.  I was curious that they would have a link on their site so I surfed my way over to their site.

I was stunned when I realized that it wasn't a link that they had on their site, however, it was a picture from my client's site.  Looking over the content around the picture, I realized that the competitor had copy and pasted directly from my client, including the picture.  The picture was loading from my client's server.

I sent a nice letter (because it was the right thing to do) explaining that the information was stolen from our site and we would like if they please removed that specific content.

I received a very nasty email back explaining that the information was not stolen and it was theirs.  If we didn't stop this harassment, they would report us to the better business bureau, Google, etc.

How to handle a stolen picture!!!! (Free advertising!)

I decided to take advantage of the opportunity.  (This is a good trick also for those stealing images on message boards, etc)  I renamed the picture and replaced the new picture on my client's site.  I then changed the picture (the one on the competitor's page) to a VERY LARGE banner ad.....(VERY LARGE!...it was impossible to miss), advertising my client's business.  The new picture included all of the benefits of my client and explained how the competitor stole content from our site.  We included the URL on the ad and asked that they use us rather than this competitor since we are honest and they are not.

Anyone going to the competitors site was greeted... on the home page... with this image!

I never heard from the competitor again, but our content was removed within a few days.

Martin - What a great story! Talk about embarrasing for that person. You would think that when someone is caught in the act they would just apologize and take it down. Glad you were able to make them look like fools after their terrible attitude.

That's funny!  I can't believe it took them "a few days" to remove it... but then again, if they weren't expecting it, they probably weren't checking everyday to see if there was a change... I wish there was a way to track how much business they lost because of it.

Justice would have been if they hadn't noticed for months :-)

You did wonderful investigative work on that one.  Shame on the thief and his nasty email back to you.

I have a question. Is it OK to use the clip art we pay for in Microsoft (word, powerpoint, etc) for our blogs? I would think as purchasers of the software that we could use it in our blogs. Anybody know??

I love retribution.  I also love making the thieves pay cold hard cash for using my content.

That's halarious.  What a great way to deal with that problem.  Imagine the shock when they found out about it.

That was one stupid thief not realizing where the pic was loading from.  Good for you, Martin, for 'fixing' it for him!

Will be looking for this on the next episode of Cops!

Martin,

that is a great idea with a good ending.  Also, in the future take a digital copy of that site, where you have proof that they stole the content, and then you can report them...

But I love how you got even with them...

I wrote a post about plagerism today, Lenn saw it and wrote a post about plagerism too.  I have used the trick you speak of but instead of an add I used a picture of a but.  :)  I am bad.

Nancy - 'Welcome to the newest hit on TV... CyberCops'

Ginger - Glad you liked.  Go Pats!

Rebecka - Thanks.

Mehmet - I thought about the digital photo after they had taken down the content.  Will do that the next time.

Teresa - You are bad! I bet the theives were a bit surprised with that one!

Lola - thanks!  On one hand...I hope you never have to use it.  Then again.... putting theives in their place is always useful!

Great idea...I started using copyscape to catch anyone stealing my content...after a local broker "cut and pasted" an entire article which showed up on one of my "google alerts"...

Crystal - Thanks...and yes it is.  It is also unnecessary!

Dominic - Yes they should.  Thanks.

Great stuff. That reminded me of how "somebody" stole my e-mail content for my drip e-mail campaign. I may have to write a blog about it.

Wow! That is an awesome way to deal with someone stealing images like that! Good thing for them you chose a "clean" image to replace it with! Could only imagine the response you would have recieved if you had replaced it with something much more out of line. Kudos to you!

NICE! I've seen worse. people constantly link funny pics on myspace...and sometimes the owner/host isn't so nice with the picture that they replace it with. hehe. your idea is great though!

Brian - you should write a blog about it!

Ed - It had to be a 'clean' image.... it was a family friendly site and I didn't want to put the wrong image in front of the wrong people.

Nate - myspace and message boards is the biggest areas of picture theft.  I like replacing them with BIG pictures.
