Design matters when it comes to safety at home. IN bathrooms you don't want your home to look like a hospital room, but the safety needs are just as important. There is a lot of institutional looking options on the market that we are all familiar with, but that is changing. There are many innovative products coming onto the market to meet the needs of baby boomers that want to age in place. Here are some tips to help you select bathroom accessories.

Tip 1 - It is all about your needs and wants - make the decisions with a designer that understands how you use the space and what you are going to need.

Tip 2 - Plan ahead to help save money in the future. Go ahead and block the wall all the way around in case your needs change. Also think about the ceiling of the space and what would happen if you ever need a lift in your space. Paying a little more up front will pay for itself in the long run.

Tip 3 - Consider how much weight the accessory will need to support. What if your parents will need to move in with you, does that change the need?

Tip 4 - Pick something that is beautiful, don't settle for the institutional solutions. Talk with a CAPS Interior Designer that knows how to plan for your needs and balance the aesthetics of the space.

Tip 5 - Make sure you use a team that is trained to understand your needs and the future issues you might face. Architects that are trained in Universal Design, Interior Designers and Contractors that are CAPS will be able to better serve your needs.

Those pictures are great. It's good to know that our parents won't have to have the handicapper shower to be safe in their homes!
