This Ain’t No Popularity Contest...Um, Yes...It Is

Real Estate Agent with Tutas Towne Realty, Inc. SL3226489

Is It A Popularity Contest? Yes!I read somewhere recently that real estate shouldn’t be a popularity contest. It’s a business and people need to make sound business decisions when they decide who to hire to sell their home. And same thing goes for agents when deciding who to refer a listing to. I think that’s probably sound advice...

But I also think that’s only half right. People should make sound decisions based on fact when they decide who to list their home with. People gravitate toward people they like and get along with. If those people (the consumer or other agents) don’t feel like they can get along very well with you they may not be comfortable giving their business to you. It could be that they feel their might be a problem with communication, or differing points of view...or who knows what else.

I can tell you one thing for sure, if they don’t like you and they feel uncomfortable from the start, the working relationship will suffer. I do my best not to be negative or dwell on the negative things that happen in life or business. I’m a fun kind of guy and I think that shows through my writing. You can’t take life too serious and you definitely can’t take things personal in this business.

Yesterday I received a short sale referral from another agent who I am friends with on Facebook. I’m not even sure I’ve read their blog, although I probably should have by now. But we get along very well and I was at the top of her mind when she needed to refer someone. It’s an added bonus that she knows I’m good at my job and I can help this seller. But when you break it down to the basics, she referred this seller to me because she likes me and I like her. So yes, it might be a popularity contest....and you know what? I’m OK with that.

Very often it is a popularity contest!. People recommend who they like and likewise being unpopular can have its disadvantages too.

Yep - I have found that true.  I get recommened because I am liked and respected - but I am liked and respected becaue I have worked hard to build that "good" reputation.

I've found it to be true also... and that's why I'm SO "me" in my blog.  They can like me or not... but no faking it.

Enjoyed reading the comments, I find that there is truly enough business for everyone, the agents, and agencies that are popular as well as those that are a boutique real estate office.

People do business with those whome they like and trust. Unless they need a kideney transplant or some other huge speciality, how they feel about the person makes a huge difference.

I don't think it is a popularity contest alone... Research shows that as you pointed out people like to do business who they perceive is like them.  There is a comfortable connection.. so I don't know that it is so much popularity.

Nate, you're so right about this. You're awesome in your writing. We all get to know who you are, to a point, and I think that'll do nothing but help with the people you work with. They're lucky to have you.

You've made a good point about the influence of popularity in making decisions.  It's significant not only in real estate but in all aspects of life I believe.  People are influenced by what they are aware of.  It's easier to gravitate toward people, products, or anything that has great visibility and a favorable reputation.

So how does one gain popularity?  Is it through word-of-mouth, demonstrated skill, self-promotion, etc.?

Popularity ?  Yes and No ... I like to think that my reputation was earned by being a great agent!  Being known is not just being popular.

Yes, Nathan, it is!  And, those who lie and say they're selling real estate and think they're all that and a bag-of-chips when they're not, WILL be 'found-out!'  You can't throw stones when living in glass houses.  I'm so tired of seeing agents who tell everyone how to manage their businesses when they do SUCH a poor job of it themselves, spout off about how they don't like the cliques or the 'popular kids!'  As Nino says, jacks of all trades, masters of NONE, they are!

While we're out there beating the streets and actually WORKING with these other agents, lenders, attorneys, etc., they're trying to figure out how to scam people with their "amazing techniques" that are totally worthless.

Okay, I'm off of my soap box now...

Nate, I can't tell you how proud I am to see you flourishing in your business.  You've come SO far in the past 2 years--I know you've worked hard and you SO deserve to be offered referrals from others who trust you.  They know with 100% certainty that you WILL get the job done!  Congrats on the new client--they're in excellent hands!

AND, congrats on the feature!! :-)

You are absolutely right, Nathan.  It is about popularity.  Spouting off numbers will only get you so far.  If you do a poor job, or you don't click with the client, who the hell cares how many homes you have supposedly sold.  I for one, try and stay away from some of the so-called big producers in my area, because if you can ever reach them, they are a nightmare to deal with.

Often it just seems that its the agent that is in people's face that gets the job....Wearing people down sadly seems to work.

I am a social butterfly. I love to get out and meet people. Does that make me popular? I don't know, just because you know a lot of people doesn't mean they all like you. But I sure hope they do! :)))

Alan said it best in #6 - "It's far more of a popularity contest than it should be." And if that's truly the case, is the client really getting the best agent, or just someone who was a chance connection online?

Congrats on the feature (speaking of popularity)... kidding. Anyway, I agree with you that it does make a difference. But the only way to be popular is for people to actually know you for something. Just have to hope its a good thing.

All day long its a popularity contest! We pick and choose so many things and service providers based on who we "like" and eliminate those we don't. Our choices are based on so many things we have experienced in the past, to where we see ourselves in the future. Choice .....  a great tool!
