Picket Fence

Should I Buy a Condo, a Townhome or a Single Family Home?

Looking for a place to call your own but without some of the traditional hassles of home ownership – like yard work? Then you may want to ask yourself this very question and consider purchasing a condominium or a townhome.

Condos and townhomes are popular for a number of reasons including size, location, shared amenities and limited maintenance responsibilities. They’re the perfect transition between hassle-free renting and a single-family home with a yard.

How do you know if the condo/townhome lifestyle is right for you? Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

1.       Do you want to own a home, but prefer to skip the snow removal, leaf blowing and other yard work?

2.       Do you want access to extra amenities, like a fitness center, swimming pool and clubhouse?

3.      Are you comfortable paying a homeowner’s association fee (which can typically cost $100-$400 per month) for someone else to manage the property?

4.       Are you willing to submit to the rules and regulations for your community, like no swimming after 10:00 p.m.?

I can help you make the decision on what is best for you by showing you the different types of homes, single family homes, townhomes, and condominiums.  Then you are able to compare the right home for you based on their features, and your lifestyle, budget, and personal preferences.  For more information please visit my website www.LisaSellsTexas.com

This is always a difficult decision for buyers, especially the "baby boomers." They no longer need the 5,000 sf home, as the children are off to college or starting their own families. They want less to take care of, but find it difficult to "move down," especially to a condo or townhome where they perceive a loss of privacy.

Good morning Jack,

Exactly correct, their is no "one size/style" fits all when it comes to choosing a home.  Thank you for stopping and commenting - have a Happy Halloween!

Hi, Lisa -- good, educational post for the first time buyer.  so many people really don't sit and think about lifestyle issues, etc. that can have a direct impact on how well the property works for them.

all the best, Eric

Lisa - it is a bit confusing for me. I did not see the difference between the condo and townhomes. I saw the link to How do you know if the condo/townhome lifestyle is right for you but it takes to a website and I did not see the answer to the question

Good morning Jon,

Condo's and Townhomes are two different types of homes here in the Dallas area, and consumers can contact me for additional information.  Many areas of the country, a condo and townhome are interchangeable terms for many properties that are not considered a single detached home.  Thank you for commenting, and have a lovely Sunday!
