Pay it Forward - Walking n Strolling For Kidneys for the State of Texas Kidney Foundation

Well, this post is a week late, but I wanted to share with you all about the terrific time I had on Sunday October 23rd, 2011 at the Walk n Stroll for the Sate of Texas Kidney Foundation.  Fellow Active Walk n Stroll Rainer Jerry Newman shared with us the opportunity to go out to the Pearl Brewery on October 23rd to do a Walk or Run for the State of Texas Kidney Foundation and I jumped right on board.

The kidney is an organ that is very important for filtering wastes and keeping our electrolytes in balance, (sodium and potassium).  They also releaseJerry Newman hormones that are responsible for helping us maintain our blood pressure, produce those blood cells and maintain our calcium levels in our bodies.  So, one could imagine what happens to a person when they have conditions that attack the kidneys...lots of bad stuff.  I am quite sure you have heard of diabetes and Texas has the highest rate of diabetic end stage renal disease in the entire Nation!  That is not a number we are proud of.  Supporting the Texas Kidney Foundation raises money for education, prevention and support for organ donation which just happens to be their Mission Statement.

Blood Sugar TestingThe Walk n Stroll at the Pearl Brewery provided some entertainment beforehand and had booths to educate people about the kidney foundation.  They also did blood pressure checks, body mass index calculation (I stayed away from that booth) and blood sugar testing.  As you can see, I took part in the fun andBlood Pressure Table got my finger stuck...ouch!  The good news is that my fasting blood sugar was 99 which means I am not yet at risk for diabetes.  You want your fasting blood sugar to be between 80-110.

That day, I was able to donate $35 to help the support the State of Texas Kidney Foundation, got me a cool T-Shirt and got to walk with Jerry Newman for a mile for the cause.  It was a lot of fun to get out in the nice San Antonio Texas weather and enjoy the stroll and support the cause.  Just click >>>> State of Texas Kidney Foundation for more information and upcoming events if you would like to help support them.

That definitely was a walk for a worthy cause.  Who knew that Texas leads the country in renal disease caused by diabetes.  I wonder why.

Hi Brenda, Glad you got your post out today about this wonderful event. You took some great photo shots, and your post is very informative about kidneys and diabetes. Once you are diagnosed with diabetes, the doctors become concerned about your kidneys.  It was a Great Cause and a Nice Day for a Walk too.

Brenda- good for you and what fun you and Jerry must have had.  All of the walks and efforts like this call attention to the disease and the need for support and research.

Hi Brenda.   Glad you had a great time for a good cause.    I did not know that the kidney had was responsible for helping us to maintain good blood pressure.    Thank you for the info!

Hi Jane-Yes it was.  Texas is probably number one with the diabetes because we have one of the highest overweight populations.

Hi Jerry-Thanks.  Kidneys become even more important once you become diabetic...in fact, a lot of the time they fail leaving diabetics no other alternative but to do dialysis.  Not usually a fun day for them.

Hi Kathy-We did have fun and it was a beautiful day to do a walk for a good cause :)!

Hi George-Thank you :)!

Hi Carol Ann-The Kidney is responsible for a lot and is a very important and vital organ :)!

Thank you all for stopping by!
