These are hard times, not just for our industry, but for the whole country. Everyday, we see evidence of lives and dreams shattered, and we're called on to help mediate the damage as best we can, providing assistance, guidance and relief. It can take a toll on our spirit and outlook, but we do the best we can, and take comfort from the fact that we're a positive force, on the side of good, working for what's right.
We sometimes are confronted with the dark side. Usually the bad guys are just lazy, incompetent, thoughtless, maybe unethical or greedy. But sometimes we run across something so egregious, so awful that we're struck dumb. That's where this story took me initially, but it's been replaced over the last several hours with a sense of extreme outrage.
It seems that the law firm of Steven J. Baum, a very large New York foreclosure mill of extremely bad reputation, likes to celebrate Halloween by having it's employees dress up in costume to mock the homeless and the homeowners they typically foreclose upon. The whole story, complete with photos of last year's event, appeared yesterday in the New York Times.
I can't begin to describe the disgusting behavior and mindset at work here. You have to see it for yourselves - here's the link: What The Costumes Reveal.
This foreclosure mill, whose client's include Citigroup, JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, has appeared in the AR blog roll before - in fact, two weeks ago, David Saks, an AR member from Memphis, TN wrote a post entitled Foreclosure Rescue Company Forced To Overhaul Its Practices.
Sometimes I despair at what I see out there. I don't really know what more to say or do about this one, except to come away with a renewed determination to try harder.
I can only assume that not one of these employees or managers has had a family member or friend touched by the recession??? No one they know has hit a rough patch financially? No other explanation for their total lack of sensitivity towards a fellow human being....unless they are simply self-centered, greedy SOBs.
Dick I am outraged as well how sad, there is so little compassion in people, Ironically I find it "it is the journey" not the "destination that makes life fun. After all the destination is the same for all of us "death" so might as well be nice on the way to the same goal.
Thanks for sharing this, Dick. It's amazing anyone can take joy in doing what they are doing. I'm hoping that what goes round comes round is true and we get to hear of their demise soon! That would be joyful!
"Appalling" just doesn't do this gross act of stupidity any justice. It lacks a certain acknowledgment of immorality to it that begs to be shouted from the rooftops. "Heinous and morbidly humiliating" might be more precise, but who am I to throw around terms of endearment to these bozos? The ultimate justice for them would be for the comapny to be shut dow and a few of them to lose their home to foreclosure. I'll bet they'd sing a far sadder tune then.
Reblogged, for maximum exposure.
This was last year's Halloween party- since then, SJB's office has paid a $2 million (while admitting no wrongdoing) fine as the result of a doj investigation, and is currently being investigated by the NY AG, along with facing several class action suits. So, he must be s*&^% that this photo is appearing now...hope his costume this year includes a diaper.
Appalling Lack of Compassion or Blatant Disregard for Humanity!?!?!?
If there is one thing I have found to be true when you draw a line in the sand (so to speak) and cross over into the dark side the punishment received for what was given is always in multiples. All I can say is a am GLAD that punishment is not coming my way!!! Disgusting and I bet several of them find themselves in the same REAL situation they just mocked others in!!!
Revenge may be a dish best served cold but I think they will be begging for ice soon for the destination they are on the fast track too!
Dick, I can only hope that the same trauma visits some of the mockers to help them learn about compassion. We had 17 foreclosures in our paper Friday. It makes my heart sick!
Dick, being cruel and in poor taste is not funny. The pictures say it all.
It is amazing the level of stupidity that rises to the top or i should say sinks to the bottom. This is just another case of greed and thoughtless people taking advantage of those less fortanate.
Wow. Given the number of homeowners that I've talked to over the years about their foreclosure problems - which usually are caused by much bigger issues - this is painful to see that this firm is so heartless.
Wow, that is just crazy! I can't belive that grown adults would act so calliously. Absolutely outrageous.
Wow, I think that appalling is quite the understatement. Mocking the desperate is not right and this behavior needs to be exposed and stopped. What am outrageous and cruel decision. Is it not bad enough that people are being foreclosed on through no fault of their own, now the banks and lawyers need to mock them as well. Thanks for posting this, we need to actively expose the companies and people who engage in this awful behavior.
This type of behaviour really can't be condoned.
It seems rather sadistic.
Dick, I read that article and I am so glad you posted about it.
Baum's firm is a notorious clising mill in my state, and their culture is truly disturbing.
How disgusting that the firm and its employees are so callus. Pleople like that should be run out of business.
All I can say about this law firm is that karm is a %$YT%$$##! This is a perfect example of the types of people that are part of the problems in the world today.
Hey Dick-
The only redeeming quality of this story is your response. The fact that this makes you want to try harder is such a testament to how you and Mary run your business and should be a model for us all. For many, a story like this can have the opposite effect and simply create the palms-up-shoulder-shrug of what difference can I make? The powers that be are too big for what I do or what I think to matter. Each of us can make a difference. Each of us can help. The question becomes to what degree will we let our disgust move us to action?
This cavalier attitude about those who have been kicked around and belittled by the privileged and protected financial empires plays out in the media with regard to the Wall Street occupiers. Sure, there are elements of crazy and the message is hard to distill to an easy to follow chant. That makes it all too convenient for the media and the public to dismiss. Seems eerily similar to how the protesters of the '60's were originally depicted. Weird how history really does repeat itself...
Chris
On occasion, I've overheard the same lack of compassion among real estate agents. Some just desperately need to be able to look down their noses at others in order to elevate themselves.
This is an excellent post and thanks for outing this law firm. If Karma is real, he may find himself out of business and in foreclosure himself- be nice if he got a taste of his own medicine! I hope #63 is right!
