Are you ashamed to be an American? Prejudice is alive and well in the World. Yesterday Monika McGillicuddy wrote about a Church that was protesting Military Funerals, and this mornings news reported the Judgement against them. But this isn't really about Americans, or our ignorance in some things, this is about Prejudice against a whole Ethnic Group, pretty much world wide.
Today the European Union is in turmoil...specifically Italy and Romania. For years the Roma Population (Gypsies to us) have been marginalized in everything....education, housing, constitutional rights, and everything else you can think of. In order for Romania to join NATO and the EU they had to make changes, and one of them was acceptance of the Roma Population. Sound familiar? We, Americans, had to deal with our own civil rights problems, after years of marginalizing certain groups.
Yesterday a Roma Citizen from Romania supposidly beat, raped and threw the wife of a high ranking official into a ditch. And now Italy is in an uproar......they have blamed Romania for this, and want to enact a moratorium effectively preventing all Romanians from traveling freely; Can you imagine what would happen if every time an American did something horrible in another country they banned all of us from traveling?
Is Prejudice justified if a disproportionate amount of people of any ethnicity commit crimes? Why should a whole Country be penalized for these behaviors? One particular report stated that yesterdays incident has caused a "bomb" to go off......and that an already bad situation has now turned worse. Several Romanians have stated that they feel ashamed, and they are afraid to leave their homes out of fear.
So next time you wonder why we have Fair Housing Laws, think......
Think of why it isn't OK to blame a whole Group for the behavior of a few. And ask yourself how you would feel if you were ashamed to be an American.

Kathy, this is an excellent post and a subject that can never be discussed too often. We're fortunate in the United States that we seem to be able to deal with prejudice fairly well. The "melting pot" has helped to do away with much of the friction between ethnic groups in this country. That doesn't mean prejudice doesn't exist here, though.
The European Union has done a pretty remarkable job of pulling together a lot of nations with differing goals, ethnic backgrounds and traditions. Ethnic violence is certainly a setback to that achievement.
