Santa

Next to Christmas, Halloween is probably one of the favorite holidays for all kids - BIG and SMALL!  Why not, you get to dress up in silly costumes, go to peoples homes and ask for candy.  What other time of year will parents allow that??

We’ve told you What’s Happening in Murphy NC for Halloween 2011. Now here are some tips to make sure everyone enjoys the holiday.

Pumpkin Safety:

Have younger children draw faces on the pumpkins and then parents do the carving.  Cut a hole in the bottom and use a small electric light instead of a candle.

Costume Safety:

Make sure costumes are flame retardant and that they fit properly.  Avoid loose clothes, high heels or long costumes with parts that hang or drag. These could cause a child to trip and skinned knees are no fun.  Incorporate reflective material on the costume if possible. If not, make sure they carry a flashlight.   Paint their faces or use makeup instead of a mask if possible.  If they are wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough so as to not impair their vision.

While Trick-or-Treating:

There are bad people out there!  Check the sex-offender registry before allowing children to trick or treat outside your own neighborhood.    If you’re not going with your children know thekidsir route and give them a curfew.  Remind them not to go into a strangers home (or car).  Be careful when crossing streets as many costumes are dark and areas are not always well lit.  Older kids should hold the hand of their younger siblings.  Stay together in groups and never let a friend go off by themselves.  Kids, if your parents do let you go without them, remember to stick to the plan, go where you said you were going to go and be home by curfew.  This helps build trust with your parents!  Most importantly don’t eat ANY candy before you get home and let your parents  check it over.

Pet Safety

Remember chocolate and pets is a big no-no.  It can be lethal!  Watch those wagging tails around decorations - especially candles.Brad

We asked Brad Waggoner, CPDT-KPA/Partner and Trainer at Cold Nose College in Murphy for some tips on keeping pets safe on Halloween.  “Keep pets in a room away from the door with some music or other sounds”,  says Brad. “Lots of doorbell ringing and kids in scary costumes can really frighten a dog”.

Halloween can be such a fun time if we take a few safety precautions ahead of time. We hope you enjoy yourselves this Halloween.
