Halloween Safety Tips- Safety First, Then the Candy!

Trick or TreatPlease make sure your Halloween is full of Treats and not on Tricks!  I love this holiday because it’s the one holiday with no pressure to buy gifts for everyone and no family pressures and traditions to follow.  All you have to do is have fun!

But, please make sure your children are safe so the little goblins and ghosts will be back again next year.   Here are a few tips:

1.  Make sure you and your children can be seen!  Kids love the glow sticks and necklaces, so you won’t have any trouble getting them to wear them.  You can also put reflective tape on their costumes and bags.  And carry a flashlight!
2.  Make sure your costumes are flame retardant.  In addition, have your little ghosts walk around in them to check for “tripping” hazards.  And if they are wearing a mask, make sure the holes are large enough for them to see where they’re going!

3.  The excitement of free candy can cause little (and big) ones to forget to look both waysTrick or Treat when crossing the street, so please make sure there’s an adult with the little goblins and ghosts at all times.

4.  And, it is unfortunate, but make sure all candy is inspected before it is eaten.  Know where your children are going and if you see something questionable remove it!

Parents- if you are driving in the neighborhoods, please drive very slowly and watch out for our little Treaters.  A sugar high and the excitement of the night can cause them to forget about all of the safety tips they’ve learned in school.

Happy Halloween!

Good morning Kathy. Good information. Don't forget the pets though. Keep them safe and confined as door bell ringing and scary costumes are not their normal environmement.

Kathy - Great tips and reminders to stay safe. I watched the original Friday 13th & Halloween 4 & 5. I told said outloud, Why are these people walking at night, alone without a flashlight?  My son told me - mom, if they had a buddy they wouldn't get killed! LOL! He's right on a not so funny topic.

Hi Kathy, You have given some nice advise for all the parents and children, who were out for the evening looking for a few treats. Hoping everyone will have a Fun and Safe time.

My apologies for responding so late to all of your comments.  I was traveling on Halloween, posted this before I left and forgot I'd written it.

Sheila- you reminded me of my dear Lucky who was so frightened at Halloween.  Every time the door bell rang she couldn't stop barking.

Gina- I hate driving on Halloween night because of the little ones.

Michael- as it turned out I heard it stormed most of the day then stopped just in time for the wee ones to get out and Trick or Treat.

Cathy- good for you.. I've never been able to watch any of those movies.

John (theQ) - we arrived home just after 8:30 and the only kids I saw out on the street were the young teenagers.  Still it was hard to see some of them.

Lou- I didn't even get any Halloween candy this year.

Amy- I always worry when I see how dark some of the streets are.

Sharon- OMG.. I remember growing up in Houston we could count on it to rain.. but never had to shovel snow!

Jerry- Hope you had a great Halloween and got lots of treats.
