November 6, 2011 - Don't Forget to "Fall Back"!

Two Sisters Talking - November 6, 2011 - Time to Change Your ClocksEver notice that when you put a pot of flowers in the window this time of year, the next time you look, there's a blank hole starring back? The flowers have all decided to move towards the window, to soak up all the sunlight. Well, this is kinda the premise for Daylight Savings Time.

Benjamin Franklin thought of this grand idea to move our clocks forward in April and back in November. This way we would have more time to work or play in the day light.

In order for us to know what we're doing on this day, we have developed a clever way of remembering. "Spring forward" and "Fall back."

Yes, the dreaded day of changing our clocks, ALL OF THEM!!  Unless you're in Arizona, though.  We stay the same.  Gotta admit, I really like that!  However, it's enough to make a gal's head spin trying to remember what time it is in everyone else's state!  Thank goodness for Google!

Studies have shown that with DST, retail sales went up, traffic accidents went down, along with crime rate. We get more Vitamin D from the sunlight, but we also have a rise in skin cancer.

We can also use this day as a reminder to change the batteries in our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

I realize this was intended to give us extra time to work and play, but seriously, is it worth it??

Good evening Pamela. Or is it afternoon in arizona. I like this and your style. Wishing everyone kept the time constant. Anyway, enjoy the evening and have a productive week.

I really wish they would stop doing this.  It's usefulness is outdated because the majority of us no longer work outside on the farm and our society is advanced to the degree that we come and go as we please, regardless of the time.

Pamela: It always takes me a week or so to adjust. No, it's not the house clocks, but my inner one. Ditto with the dogs and their mealtime.

So with Arizona and Indiana staying the same all year round, the sun rises at 4:00 am on some days and 7:00 am on others. Confusing?? Don't think so, unless you live in Indiana and work in Illinois, half of the year you could be late for work? Puzzling...

Fooey!  I don't like Standard Time - I want the Sun to shine as late in the day as possible.

I guess we are getting to that time of year.  It is hard to believe we are going into winter.

Yes, looking forward to getting that extra hour.   I can really use it.  But, not looking forward to shorter days.

....Experience Isn't Expensive.... It's Priceless!

Good morning Pamela,

Enough with changing the clocks, there is no need for it to be sunny at 9:00pm in the summer and pitch black at 5:00pm in the winter...I would like more light in the evening hours of winter, as I am not hibernating!

I agree with all of you.  I live in the southwest practically bordering CA, NV and AZ.  At certain times of the year, I can leave me house at noon and get to the CA or NV border at the same time.

For years my dad never got this right.  We would end up at church sunday morning either an hour early or when it was done.

That's funny, William.  Just what you want when you're a kid - to be at church an hour early. ;)
