What's Happened to Halloween?

It's 7:30 PM on October 31 and I'm sitting alone with a large bowl of candy. No, I'm not binging, well, maybe a little. But last I checked, October 31 is Halloween. The day when tons of small children are supposed to storm my door begging for candy. And I give the good stuff - Peanut M&M's, Peanut Butter Cups, and all the Hershey's bite size candy bars. None of that healthy crap.

It used to be that we would run out of candy early. But kids just don't come by anymore. Is it just me? Or has trick-or-treating just changed in some sick way?

I mean, if my kids were still young....oh wait, the doorbell just rang. See ya......

Bob - please send any and all leftovers to our house - I'll take care of 'em for you!  ;)

I think so many parents take the lazy way out and take kids to events at schools, churches, etc where they walk around a gym and are given candy.  Not like when we were growing up!

Rob-- we live in a big neighborhood in Portland, Maine and had a neighbor, Bill Green, who works for WCSH Channel 6.....he brought lights, camera and action to the neighborhood years ago and ever since.... We can't keep enough M&M's, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Kit-Kat's, Snicker's..... in our basket! We love seeing our neighborhood friends and children! Amazing customes this year-- most kids gave their Mom's all the credit for make-up and costume, BTW!! Happy Halloween!!

Hi Bob, Happy Halloween!  We got lots of candy and sat in our family room waiting for kids, but not one kid has come by.  I think our neighborhood is a hard one to trick-or-treat in because the area is hilly and the properties are large, so it takes a lot of hiking to get through just our block.

Also, there are several churches around here that put on safe Halloween functions and they draw a lot of kids.  Oh well, I guess we'll have a lot of candy around here for awhile!

When my children were young there was a scare involving candy that had been tampered with.  Add to that the number of wierdos, perverts and impaired drivers.  Door to door just didn't make sense anymore. My husband & I  decided it was safer to take them to an event where I knew who was there and what the kids were being given. Most of the churches in my area have events that include bouncers, pony rides and costume contests.  Oh yeah, and lots and lots of candy.

We had over 125 kids come by our house in Plano (I buy the big candy bars so I know how many we gave away) but we decorate like crazy with fog and lights, have done so for a few years. I think some neighborhoods are busier than others. I wish I had candy left over!
