Using the law of closure in your marketing

My mom had cataract surgery at 6:15 this morning. I don't get up at 6:15 on a regular day, much less on a day to let someone cut on my eyes!

Her surgery has me thinking about our eyes and how the brain sees what our eyes see. That led me to psychology, where I found the Kanizsa triangle:

Kanizsa triangle

What do you see? If you're normal (defined as, if you see what I see), you see three pies with a piece missing (someone was hungry!), a black triangle with three pieces missing (what's with all the missing pieces of everything?), and an upside-down white triangle.

That's not really what you see. That's what your brain sees. The brain creates shortcuts based on its experience and what it knows in order to continue to make sense of the world around us.

This illusion is one of the gestalt laws of perceptual organization, the law of closure. It's what your brain does in order to make sense out of what your eyes see. When the brain sees objects that are grouped together, it sees those objects are part of a whole. Gaps here and there in the information are ignored in order to make the image appear as a cohesive whole.

Imagine if you used this in your real estate marketing. I have some ideas, but I'll need help from my two marketing gurus/techies to implement them well. Here's what I did on my own:

What's missing from this picture?

Did you guess right?

What's missing from this picture?

By the way, the Kanizsa triangle illusion was developed in 1955 by an Italian psychologist named Gaetano Kanizsa. Ergo, the name. Pretty neat. Maybe some day I'll have something named after me!

Jim:   I see two large triangles and my brain chose to place the circles "Secondary".  I am really going to concentrate on my past clients in 2012 and get many referrals!

Connie - I can, too, but I couldn't find a sold sign. I'll have to have my gurus make a graphic one for me.
