Inspirational Architecture Meets Science

The Salk Institute

Ever since I have taken up photography as a hobby, I have thought about this shot of the Salk Institute in La Jolla and the timing never seemed to be right to get it. There were always too many people around and walking through the shot. It is after all a busy workplace during the week and the access gates are always closed on weekends. This afternoon, I decided to try again and when I arrived there seemed to be a flurry of activity. I was setting up the tripod and all of sudden the shot was mine to take. Patience has its rewards if you don't fail to discount just pure dumb luck.

William - Great shot!  I hate it when you start to set up your tripod, everyone wants to stick around and see what you're going to do.  Your pure dumb luck skilled photography is spot on!!

Hi Bill and Cindi, I had almost 5 minutes of uninterrupted time with no one moving into the frame. I took some 70 shots utilizing the light as it contrasts the buildings. This architecture is pure and needs no human form to enhance it but being a busy research center and world famous architecture, it is usually a thriving place and you practically would need an appointment to have a clear shot. When I got there, there was even a couple sitting at end looking out to the ocean lazily enjoying the view. Usually they are not going anywhere. When everyone left, which was sudden, I had my chance and took it. The photo above is not the most famous composition as appears in many magazines and journals. But I did get that one as well and I will use it a post about this most famous institute one day.

Hi Margaret, Thank you so much. I am actually quite pleased to be able to have a whole of photos on the building in my collection. There are a couple shots  that are quite special and I am delighted with the outcome.

Wow, William!  I can see why you were willing to be patient for that shot.  Very artistic use of perspective!

Hi Lynn, Honest, I hardly waited more than a few minutes. When the couple at the end of the pool got up ( the pool is on a slightly lower plain than this photo and can't be seen), I got excited and within seconds it was all clear. And it stayed that way for several minutes which allowed for some great shots that I wanted. If I could find this same scenario in the morning light, it would be awesome. I'll try that next.

Hi Susan, Thank you very much. This photo is similar but not the same as the brilliant architectural photos of the Salk that have been published. They are more defined to the edge of the buildings and I was also able to get that more famous shot and will use it for a story about the Salk one day.

Hi Gail, :-) As I studied this, I realized that in mid summer when the Sun is highest, the buildings would be balanced color wise and I have to go back and try this again. That lighting phenomenon should also happen in late winter when the sun is most southerly and the interior of this corridor should be with much less light and the buildings balanced in color again. These photos will do for now :-) But I can only guess that it was either mid summer or mid-winter time when the original published photos first appeared in print.

Wow, your photographic abilities are really quite something.  I am enjoying your pictures, especially this one.  I've seen your others and I don't think dumb luck has anything to do with it.  You are truly talented. :) Gail

William - pure dumb luck can sometimes bring very unexpected results. You can't bet on it but you can't discount it either   ;-)
