You asked for it, you got it!  You can now opt out of being visible online.  So lurk away!

There's a new setting.  When logged in, go to My Home.  Click on Settings in the left hand nav and you should see, under General, "Allow others to see when you're online".

Note though, we're not just showing you online for the no reason (well, right now I guess we technically are :).  We're working on some features to allow members to interact in real time (hopefully chat - still in R&D), field questions from potential clients, etc. - if you're not visible online you probably won't be able to use these features when the come out.

Gabriel,

I know there are Chinese restaraunts in Chicago. They come with the fortune cookies sometimes.

Options and privacy are good. I find it interesting to see who is up really early on the west coast and who is up really late on the east coast.

Thank you, thank you - That's great, especially being able to set whether we're visible or not.  You guys are awesome!

I have gone to the settings page and duly clicked the button - now you see me - now you don't!

Live Chat with Active Rain members!  Wow, talk about an addiction to Active Rain that can multiply by a 1,000 times!  That would be pretty neat.  Seeing how we are in a day of age that no one knows how to make a phone call anymore.  Only emails, faxes and text messaging.

Maureen:  It's actually a little smarter than that (the online thing).  The way it works is every time you do anything on the site (and are logged in) we add you to the online queue.  Every 10 minutes we have a program delete all records from that queue that are older than 10 minutes.  This means, if you stay logged on, but don't do anything, you should drop off that queue in 10 or so minutes.

But - we understand "lurk" mode.  We're all supposed to be working too :)

Can you build it so that only TLW can see when I'm online?

I'm with Lisa and Gabriel on this one - I'm here TO be seen!

The more contact, the better - that's the whole point!

It's nice to have it offered as an option though, it might help Newbies be more comfortable at first.

Lisa - I couldn't have explained it much better than Maureen McCabe did... "Some don't want to look as if they spend their whole day on Active Rain because that could be imisinterpteted."  You may also get a better understanding of how some of us feel about this by reading these two posts:

Voyeur?  Shy? by Maureen McCabe and The Privacy Protection Question Mark by Maureen Francis

Ben - Thanks for the clarification.  It helps to know this stuff.  Unfortunately for me, because I multi-task so much, sometimes even while I'm on a long phone call, I'll be clicking away around AR, so it would keep me on the queue which would make me still appear to be "actively" blogging even though all I'm doing is surfing AR while on a call.  Also, on the days I publish a post, I try to check the "My Home" page every 5-15 min. (while working on other things) in case someone leaves a comment I want to reply to right away.  There is a method to my madness!

Oh, no... they're watching me.  Oh, wait... I want to be seen.

But I like the option to be hidden.  Thanks for giving it us.

Marc - Behave. :)

The whole point of networking is meeting others. But if some want to lurk in anonimity, I guess that's fine too. -Charles

Show me "ONLINE" and can't wait to direclty interact...but a blog will have to be pretty powerful to even get that kind of response from a consumer, IMO...i'm like...why not :) thanks gang!!

I think that some of the "older" Active Rainers like the option to decide whether they are showing online or not because after doing this everyday, sometimes you just want to be able to get your comments in and do a blog without interuption.

With the new features coming up, which I think will be great, there may be times you do not want to be fielding questions either.

This way, we can all pick and choose what we want to do.

Thanks for the option.  I don't like being interrupted by a contact when I'm working on a blog.  I'd prefer to be invisible at those times.
