What would I do with an extra three hours of time?

By
Real Estate Agent with Associate Broker, Momentum Realty

Once upon a time I was a harried mother of three young children. My husband traveled all the time. At times, the children were all in different schools and so I spent a lot of time driving around. They played soccer and baseball, did scouting and dance, I volunteered at the school and spent hours at the playground.  I stayed home with them and relished my alone time.

Over time, they started to grow up. Eventually, the oldest became a licensed driver and my burden was lightened. Then she went off to college and my second got her drivers license. Now there are two off at college and one who is about to get his learners permit. Gosh! Life changes quickly, doesn't it?

When the kids were younger, an extra three hours of time would mean getting as far away as possible from demands that pulled me in all directions--and which never seemed to let up. I would escape to the mall--and forget my phone in the car. Maybe meet some girlfriends for dinner. Head to the spa or take in a movie.

Today, if I had a block of 3 hours, I would gather my children and
Birthday Dinner husband around and enjoy their company. We would head out to a restaurant for a nice meal and, maybe, go the theater before hand.  If we were more crunched for time, I would cook them all a meal that included all their favorite foods. We would put on some music, turn off the cell phones, ignore the land-line and enjoy each other's company!

It is amazing how time changes your priorities.  I remember thinking back then that one day I would miss all the chaos--and I do.

I'm there right now.  Working in RE and dropping off and picking up 2 kids from school at different times.  I spend at least 3 hours a day with that.

It's funny how things change - for example when they are little and thinking "can you just sit still for 5 minutes" then when they become teens or tweeners and thinking "could you just get off the computer for 5 minutes..." Ha!

Holly:  Wow... what a great family you have... and great-looking, too.  You do nice work !

And yes... having all that extra time... it can just boggle the mind.  Somehow or other, I am sure you will find a way to put it to good use.

Holly-I have been there, done that, but somehow, we always manage to fill those hours! I thought that when my kids were grown and gone, I would be playing tennis and golf all day. Instead, I started a real estate brokerage and am loving it! Where did the golf and tennis go? I still enjoy the tennis occasionally, but golf definitely takes a back seat.....

Me too tonight.  Had to take a couple of hours with significant other as we have been all about our hottest new training program, IGNITE, and the INSTANT results from it has brought us more customers in one week than in the last 2 months.

With under 4 hours of sleep for over a week, we took today and vegged (sort of) See my blog for the day on Regions, and we took some time for ourselves.  You know life things like groceries, lawn, OTHER THINGS, dinner, and now AR to just veg out.

Not complaining in the least about the new level of business, but couldn't we just pace it just a bit...

Justin, enjoy it...it passes so quickly. You think you will never, ever have any free time and next thing you know, they are filling out college applications!

Sara, you are so right!

Karen Anne, Thank you so much!  Best of all, they are great kids and so much fun to be around.

Joy, It is hard, isn't it?  We booked two trips recently--hoping to take advantage of the kid's time before full-time employment makes it even harder to schedule. My oldest graduates this year and has a job lined up :).

Dagny, I laughed when I read your comment. My husband keeps thinking that any minute now, I will be able to start improving my golf game.  Somehow when I have an extra five hours, I always have something that needs doing!

Kevin, sounds like you are busy! Is there such a thing as 'pacing' in Real Estate?

Ellie, I completely understand! We have a lacrosse game later on...but still, compared to before when we had to be at 3 different fields, this feels a little luxurious! Good luck at the game.

Holly, your post makes sense. it's hard to put it in perspective when you're living it. I have 2 small children and sometimes I relish my alone time and then I think that before I know it they'll be heading off to college and I'll wonder where the time went. I try to know that much of my 3 extra hours a week will go to my kids while they still want to spend time with me!
