Voluntarily Happy

By
Real Estate Sales Representative with RE/MAX Preferred RS152252A

I read a magazine article this morning entitled Voluntarily Happy in November's issue of Good Housekeeping.  First of all, yes, I stole the title for this post from the magazine article.  Secondly, lest you worry that I have become overly domesticated, no worries.  I do not subscribe to this magazine, while I think it's a good one.  My little momma does and she only passed it on to me because there's an article about none other than "my Antonio".  For people that know me, Antonio needs no further introduction.  For the uninitiated, he's Antonio Banderas,

The article in Good Housekeeping is about volunteering and offers these statistics:

  • About 1/4 of all Americans volunteer.
  • About 1/3 of those volunteer more than 100 hours a year.
  • This, while sounding like a lot of time, only equates to about 2 hours per week.

Aside from the fact that I truly believe all people should give back to their communities, studies show that a habit of helping others boosts happiness.  I am a firm believer in working very hard to be as happy as possible.  It doesn't happen by accident, you need to be mindful to be happy.

Some people hold the opinion that Real Estate Agents are a bunch of greedy money grubbers, only out to make a buck.  While there are bad apples in every profession, I know far more that do good work for others than you might think.  I am a people pleaser by nature and that extends from my personal life into my professional life.  I am a helper and real estate is the natural progression of doing what I love, which is helping people. My other passion is feeding people and I get to do that through my volunteer work for Meals on Wheels.  I know many agents who work hard at their profession of helping people buy and sell homes and then spend countless hours helping others through the various charities and causes they champion.  What follows is a short list of only some of the endeavors that real estate agents across our country support either through their time and talent, or with monetary donations, or both:

Meals on Wheels.  This link is for my local chapter.  Meals on Wheels organization provides warm and nourishing meals for shut ins.  My favorite place to volunteer.

Mothers Fighting For Others.  This organization provides orphaned girls with a loving and nurturing environment and a quality education, so they can learn, thrive and achieve their highest potential.  Starting in Kenya, the goal is to build orphanages all over the world.

Our Special Place.  This organization was founded by two special families with a mission to enrich the lives of children with special needs by providing a variety of professional services in a nurturing and therapeutic environment.  You can read more about this here.

Mobile Loaves and Fishes.  Provides food and clothing and promotes dignity to homeless men and women.  You can read more about this here.

Habitat for Humanity.  Is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian Ministry founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live.

Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.     Dedicated to raising funds to improve medical facilities and health-care for sick and injured children.

So you want to be happy?  Volunteer.  I missed the deadline to dedicate this to Thankful Thursday but Carpe Diem anyway!  Life is good.  Enjoy it.

Christine, Just imagine!

Tim, agreed!  Nice people do tend to volunteer more and it's fun to meet like minded folks.

Gary, now's the time!

Phil, I love you right back bello!  Don't forget that I didn't start volunteering until Max was a little older.  Your children are still small and you have 4 of them. I only have 2 and they are 7 years apart so I had some time when Mike was a little older where he could watch Max for a bit.  I was also not running my own company.  :-)  Cut yourself some slack buddy.

Norma, when you take the focus off of you, problems go on the back burner.

Karen, thanks!

Ann, say hello to my Antonio!

Maria, there's never a shortage of thinks you could do!

Deb, spending time with elderly relatives is a great thing to do.  xxoo

Ruth, that's my next thing to add to the days.  I want to volunteer to help at our local SPCA.

Tammie, 8 hours a week is a lot of time!  Whew!

Lisa, thank you.

Trevor, you're right.  But people who like to help others often can't accept, or ask for help themselves.

Anthony, I totally agree.

Pam, I've often thought that keeping up with the Jones was silly and now that the Jones are in foreclosure, it's just plain stupid.  How many things do we need?

Bryant, I've always known that it was my job to make myself happy.  Some days it's hard work.  Some days I don't rise to the occasion.  Most days I do.  xxoo

Kristi, when my kids were smaller, most of my volunteering was at school.

Chuck, you're right.  If you do something you enjoy, that even better.

Paul, thank you!

I absolutely agree with giving back to your communities! I think if you are a realtor that is the best way to show your community that you are willing to make where they live a better place. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend!

Love the title -- it was worth "borrowing!"  :-)   After working 80+ hours a week for the last 4 or 5 years, I finally took a step back and started giving back... and it feels fantastic!

Susan, volunteering is what separates the greedy from the givers.  I used to volunteer at the local food bank until I got to busy with business but that is not acceptable.  We NEED to make time to help those in need and I will.

Our community offers a lot of volunteering opportunities and it's always fulfilling to participate in them. You get to know your peers, neighbors and casual acquaintences in a whole new way, and you meet new people as well. While we all value our time and think we have too little of it, volunteering truly does give more back to you than realize, and it sets a great example for the next generation to follow.

Andrew, :-)

Gina, helping others is the point but showing the public the kind of people Realtors really are will go a long way to dispelling the opinion that we are not good people.

Cal, good for you.  I get a lot of true happiness from it as well.

Tamara, true!

Kerry, all work and no play.... and volunteering and having fun doing it is the key.

Tom, everyone does what they feel they can at the moment.

Steve, good for you.  It's a good time of year to get back into it.

Charlie, our community is always doing things to help others as well and there's no shortage of ways to volunteer if you really want to.

Russell!  YOU rock my Friend!!!! I love the idea of Mobile Loaves and Fishes.

Hi Susan, Even if people do not have the time to volunteer, there are many other ways to give back. I try to volunteer as much as I can. The holidays are coming up and I find this is when the volunteer stats go up. A few hours a week is not a lot.

Susan, you and I have similar interests as you know.  I volunteer at the Senior Center about three hours a week.  And, I also help out at Fare for All, an offshoot of Second Harvest Heartland, a food share group.

I am so thankful for your volunteering with the Meals on Wheets.

I used to be chapter president of our local Habitat for Humanity, and every realtor might want to join their local chapter, too.  What a great way to serve our communities.
