Put up your dukes

I'm not talking about the "put up your dukes" type of toughness. I'm talking about mental toughness.

"Mental toughness is to see the long term gains rather than be put off by short term pains. Once you have this toughness, you have the winning edge."

To be mentally tough you must have these attributes:

  • You cope with the ups and downs better than your "opponents"
  • You're more consistent, focused, and resilient
  • You have an unshakable belief in what you are doing
  • You have an insatiable desire and motivation to succeed
  • You bounce back from setbacks with renewed determination
  • If plan A doesn't work, you move on to plan B or plan C
  • You look at failure as a stepping stone for future achievement

Do you want fries with that?I don't know about you, but I'm mentally tough. I've worked way too hard building my real estate business to end up in a job that requires a paper hat. I'll be around for the long haul.

Of course, this idea doesn't just apply to real estate professionals. It applies to everyone: athletes, students, the stay-at-home mom, the laid off engineer. We all have challenges to overcome. When you read the list of attributes above, do you see yourself? Or do you see your competitor? How tough are you? Anyone want to weigh in?

Great post Kelly!  'Course, I figured you were tough right from the start.

Part of being tough is admitting that something isn't working and having the courage to do something about it.

A paper hat ??? The picture says it all. I believe in this business at this time, you MUST be mentally tough, only the strong are surviving.

I'm tough but I also have a kind and gentle side.

I don't know how tough I am, but I'm still plugging away every day...I refuse to allow this market to make ME quit.  Another great post, Kelly.

Todd & Danielle: "Don't let your current appetite steal from your future feasts" is another great line!

Jessica: Coming from you, that means a lot. I don't know if they come any tougher than YOU!

Missy: I don't look very good in hats, ha ha. :)

Neal: Strong, yet gentle. A good combo.

Lisa: I think that's the key. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other. You will not just survive, but THRIVE!

Timely!  We all should be doing the things we need to be doing compared to the things we want to be doing.  WHATEVER IT TAKES!  If you fall down, get up and again and again and again....I've got my helmet and my shouldpads on! :)

Shannon: I agree. Progress doesn't necessarily mean you're going up all the time. Sometimes you go sideways. Sometimes you take a step back. The point is...are you still moving?

Kelly, you are so right.  I don't think I would use the word tough for myself but I am a survivor and my passion is what drives me.  Thanks for the strong post!

I like the post, but disagree that it is all about toughness.  I think a lot of success is grounded in the the fact that is all about living in the now, doing the best you can and having the attitude let's wait and see.  I used to be on the executive board of a union, and dealt with negotiations, arbitrations, lobbying, and the politics that goes with it.  Some of life is playing chicken.  Not giving away the hand for lack of a poker face is another.  Another valuable tool that I learned about is patience.  Time is the most valuable of all tools in a contract...and the most overlooked component of success.  Since there is more than one party in a contract, on a counter...do not respond until the last minute.  Let the other-side beat themselves up with worry.  Toughness sometimes is having knowledge, and knowing exactly how to use it effectively.

Great post. I am doing the whole affirmation thing right now. Cutting out pictures of things I am working towards in key places and posting your list of questions is another great thing to post on the wall above my desk.

Jim: You are right, it's not all about toughness. Everything you mentioned is valid. Mental toughness will keep you hanging in there during trying times! Thanks for your comments!

Heather: Wow! I'm honored to have my little list up on your wall. Those little reminders keep us positive!

Hey Kelly, I think I would consider myself to be fairly tough.  However, I am also fortunate enough to be blessed with a tough wife!  I don't mean that she is a brute of "manish" but this delicate looking beauty has a will and resolve that baffles even me.  Together, we are DEFINITELY tough!
