What kind of roof is the best for installing PV panels?
Everybody wants to save money. One way to save money is by putting photovoltaic panels on the roof of your home. Here in Hawaii it really makes sense with some of the highest rates in the nation for electricity.
What kind of roof is the best for installing PV panels? The very best kind of roof is a metal standing seam roof because the array can be clamped on. The worst kind of roof for photovoltaic panels are the cedar shake roofs, becuase drilling all those holes can result in leaks. Monier tile roofs are good for attaching PV panels because they are solid and predictable.
If you're going to be building a new home keep this in mind when it comes to designing your roof. Here in Hawaii it is mandatory to have solar hot water for your newly constructed home. You might also want to consider having PV panels when you are designing your Hawaii home because it will pay off sooner than you think.

Georgina, this seems like the low hanging fruit of energy savings in your state and I don't know why everyone isn't doing this. Geothermal is another route that would work in your area. Good for you to provide this depth of insight to your readers.
Georgina - I have recommended this one for a feature! Great information that needs to get out there!
Asphalt shingles are easy to work on also.
